From the Author
I've been locked in a room for over two-and-a-half years, the only light--the soft glow of a computer screen. That's how I remember it, anyway. After finishingHollow World, I began working on what was supposed to be a trilogy called The First Empire. Three books became five, and two-and-a-half years slipped away.

Readers of The Riyria Chronicles began requesting book three immediately afterThe Rose and Thorn's release in September 2013. The Chronicles--previously expected to be a flop because prequels are the third rail of publishing--did surprisingly well. I apologize to everyone who has been anxiously awaiting this book, but at least the wait is over!

If you are new to the Riyria stories, you certainly can start with this book. The first two Riyria Chronicles told the origin story of how Royce and Hadrian met. With that tale told, this book was freed to tell a standalone adventure. If you do want to read other Riyria novels, then you should know there are two different ways you can approach the saga.

  • Order of Publication:Theft of Swords*Rise of Empire*Heir of Novron*The Crown Tower*The Rose and the Thorn*The Death of Dulgath
  • Chronological Order:
The Crown Tower*The Rose and the Thorn*The Death of Dulgath*Theft of Swords*Rise of Empire*Heir of Novron
Personally, I prefer order of publication, but I've heard from people who have read chronologically and they've been equally pleased with the experience.

If you are wondering if there will be a next Royce and Hadrian story, the answer is: I just don't know. As I've mentioned elsewhere, I'm protective of the duo and would rather have them leave early than stay too long. Because of that, I never know if there will be more until after a Chronicle's release. If you want to advocate for more, by all means drop me an email. Even if you don't, you can still reach out. I always love hearing from people. My address is:michael. sullivan.dc@gmail.com.

One of the really cool things about this project was the ability to showcase an aspiring writer's work. We asked for submissions from anyone and everyone. I sifted through 176 entries and narrowed it down to fifteen good stories. From there it went to the final three. Robin helped me decide on the winner. I wish all of them could have been included--each one was deserving. In today's super-saturated world of publishing, exposure often makes the difference between success and failure. Robin and I hope that you'll like the story we've included, and if you do, please look for more from T.C. Powell and help spread the word.
One last thing I should mention. If you are interested in learning more about the novel creation process, I've created an e-book entitled:The Making of the Death of Dulgath. It's free, so just drop me an email at the address above. Some people might find the process interesting.

Thank you for your interest, I hope you'll be interested to turn the page, tap the screen, or adjust the volume. Old friends are waiting to take you on a new adventure.

Thanks for all the amazing support.

About the Author
After finding a manual typewriter in the basement of a friend's house, Michael J. Sullivan inserted a blank piece of paper and typed: It was a dark and stormy night. He was just eight years old and mimicking the greatest (or only) writer he knew about at the time...Snoopy. That spark ignited a flame and the desire to fill blank pages would become a life-long obsession.
As an adult, Michael spent more than ten years developing his craft by studying authors such as Stephen King, Ernest Hemingway, and John Steinbeck. During that time, he wrote thirteen novels but found no traction in publishing. He did the only sane thing he could think of (since insanity is repeating the same act but expecting a different result), he quit and vowed never to write creatively again.
Michael stayed away from writing for a decade and returned to the keyboard in his forties...but with one condition: he wouldn't seek publication. Instead, he wrote a series of books that had been building in his head over his hiatus. His first reading love was fantasy, and his hope was to help foster a love of reading in his then thirteen-year-old daughter, who struggled due to severe dyslexia. After reading the third book of this series, his wife insisted the novels needed to "get out there." When Michael refused to jump back onto the query-go-round, she took over the publication tasks and has run "the business side" of his writing ever since.
Michael's works have sold more than half a million English language copies, been translated into thirteen foreign languages, and appeared on more than one hundred "best of" or "most anticipated" lists including those compiled by Library Journal, Barnes & Noble, Goodreads, and Audible.com.

"The Death of Dulgath"... another terrific Royce and Hadrian medieval adventure... 5 Stars
By R. Nicholson
"The Death of Dulgath" is the 3rd book in the 'Riyria Chronicles' series by author, Michael J Sullivan. This Kindle e-book was approximately 432 printed pages and sold for $7.67 at time of writing this review.

Please Note: I was involved in a Beta read of this book.

General Theme (minor spoilers)

Royce and Hadrian are hired to travel to a remote section of the realm (Southern Maranon) to give their opinions on how best to prevent a murder. Being mercenaries and assassins in not-so-distant-days past, one would assume they'd be the perfect pair to offer unusual 'specialized advise'.
However, the potential murderee, one Lady Nysa Dulgath is not your average shrinking violet when it comes discussing her own demise... as Royce and Hadrian are about to find out.
Thus begins the adventure of the "The Death of Dulgath"...

1.) well written and edited. Prose that was a pleasure to read.

2.) the characters of Royce Melborn and Hadrian Blackwater remain unchanged and untarnished from previous books. They display their usual cynical tone and ongoing bantering conversations with each other, that previous readers have come to love and expect.

3.) action... lots of action, clandestine plotting and backstabbing. The perfect setting for our two heroes.

4.) a host of interesting character to befriend/oppose Royce and Hadrian.

5.) as with all other Riyria books the sense of pace and timing was spot on. There were no draggy sections and there was absolutely no 'fill'.

6.) map... a good general map giving a sense of distance, direction and topography.

7.) cover art... a image of a isolated-looking and creepy, cliff-perched castle.
A perfect cover for the locale found within these pages.

Impressions:
Another terrific, stand-alone Riyria novel. Once again, Michael J Sullivan has chosen his two main characters, Royce Melborn and Hadrian Blackwater, to entertain his readers with another thrilling, medieval fantasy/horror adventure.

As it is... 5 Stars.

Riyria Returns
By Amazon Customer
Riyria has been contracted to prevent the murder of Lady Nysa Dulgath. A simple task really, all Royce and Hadrian have to do is tell their employers how they would go about committing her assination. Their employers would then go about securing the areas that Royce would exploit if he were the one making the attempt. Couldn't be easier, give advice, collect the consulting fee and leave. Unfortunately it soon becomes quite complicated. There's murder and betrayal, enemies posing as friends, greed and ambition; all contributing to making you lose sleep since it will keep you up long past the time you should have gone to bed. You'll say just one more chapter, which turns into well maybe one more, and another and another.

Along with a great plot, you get to know Royce and Hadrian better. Seeing how their friendship evolves is another incentive to pick up this book. Bits and pieces from their past are revealed as they get to know each other better. This is especially true with Royce.

Once again Mr. Sullivan has carefully crafted a book worthy of your time and money. With so many base hits and foul balls out there, its good to know that this author consistently delivers grand slam homeruns.

Another really great addition to the world of Riyria! Full of more adventure and suspence, drama and romance, plot twists and turns, and incredible reveals at the end. Anyone who's read any of the Riyria books, or even just enjoys and top of the line, well written fantasy/adventure book, must add this fun and thoroughly enjoyable book to the their repitoire.
