The Energy Gap: How to Solve the World Energy Crisis, Preserve the Environment & Save Civilization, by Doug L Hoffman, Allen Simmons

Humans have a trait that distinguishes us from all other species: the ability to use fire. We turn on a switch and light comes into our homes. With the turn of a key, vehicles take us where we want to go. We adjust a thermostat in our homes to make us warm or cool. These are everyday events we hardly think about. It took centuries of vision, science and engineering to achieve this comfort-point in our long evolutionary journey. Today, an average person lives better than kings lived several centuries ago. As we revealed the facts behind global warming in our last book, The Resilient Earth, we take the same tack in out latest work, The Energy Gap. In its pages, we present the hard science and engineering that will close a looming energy gap for our country and the world. There is also a warning. If we chose the political route, the activist route, the human race will slide backwards for the first time since the Industrial Revolution. If we choose the correct path, as revealed in The Energy Gap, our species will continue its forward march towards a brighter future for all on Earth

From the Author
For the last half century the United States has been the acknowledged leader of the free world, especially in scientific and technological innovation. In recent decades, however, it appears that America has stumbled badly in one area: the quest for clean reliable energy. Other nations around the world have seized the initiative, announcing bold alternative energy programs. But they too are finding the path to a secure energy future difficult and fraught with hazards.

Your authors are both products of the latter half of the 20th century--an age when American ingenuity and optimism knew no bounds. We have watched with increasing concern as belief in progress has waned, both in the US and around the world. The future is now looked upon by many with fear and trepidation. The technology that has served us so well is now suspect, the energy that powers our factories and lights our cities viewed by many as a curse that is destroying nature and may even lead to our own destruction. The belief that each succeeding generation would enjoy a better quality of life than their parents has been called into question.

At the heart of this wave of lowered expectations and self loathing there is a growing problem, the shortfall between energy supplies and demand--an ever widening energy gap. And this is not just an American problem, every nation on Earth is scrambling to secure the energy their citizens require. At the same time, anti-globalization protesters, ecological activists, United Nations bureaucrats and meddling politicians are all using fear of climate change and the hunt for clean energy as a way to pursue their private agendas. In The Energy Gap, we will reveal where the problem lies and how to move forward to a safe, secure, and ecologically sound energy future using proven technology we already possess.

About the Author
Authors Doug L. Hoffman and Allen Simmons both have strong backgrounds in science and engineering. Hoffman has a PhD in Computer Science from the U. of North Carolina where he did research in molecular dynamics and protein structure. Currently he serves as senior grid architect for a major IP company and as an adjunct Professor of Computer Science at UCA and Hendrix College. Simmons has a BSEE from U. of Miami and worked first for Bell Labs, then twelve years for NASA. Subsequently, he met Hoffman and, together, developed a complete hardware/software system to track nuclear submarines and targets at a deep ocean test range in the Caribbean Sea. Returning to the States, and after completing a Navy test project for the F-18, both men ventured to Saudi Arabia to participate in the construction of an industrial city, where latest technologies of co-generation, refining and desalination were implemented.

If you liked their last book, The Resilient Earth, you will love this one
By NYC Lady
The authors, Hoffman and Simmons, should be running the US Department of Energy. Just like their last book, The Resilient Earth, where they started with the beginning of Earth and took us on a journey of how, when and why our planet's climate is what it is today, their new tome, The Energy Gap, takes a similar course with insightful vignettes of history, science and engineering as they relate to energy. Right out of the gate about energy, they write: "Prehistoric people, indistinguishable from modern humans, lived through frigid times aided by instincts, hunting skills, cooperation and by using the one thing that separates humans from all other species. That thing is not the use of tools, or even speech; it is the use of fire." The authors then take us on a journey of energy sources, starting with wood, coal, whale oil, petroleum, nuclear and then the book reveals something happened. The cycle of energy sources that leads to new technology, and new technology that leads to new energy sources went awry when we arrived at nuclear power. For the first time in human history, we stopped and look backward, not forward. Yes, for the first time, since the advance of the industrial revolution, where the average person in the developed world, lives better than kings did several centuries ago, we turned our back on a new technology. And that technology is nuclear. In clear, straightforward language, with backup numbers, the authors explain the folly of unreliable, variable, energy sources, called renewables. They do not make up stories about energy sources, they back up their words with facts, graphs, illustrations and numbers. Anyone who receives an electric bill each month should read this book. The authors state that, in their research for The Energy Gap, they found the same troubling element they found in their last book, and that element was politics. In the past, lofty goals of science and engineering were attained with incredible speed, yet in today's political arena, scientific, engineering achievement is gridlocked. This well-written, cogent book is a straight-on plan for a worldwide energy policy. Now, if we could get the DOE off their backsides and have them implement what these two brilliant guys wrote, the USA would get back on track to its destiny; greatness and an example for the world to follow. And, oh, by-the-way, if we do not act on it, we can kiss our greatness good-bye. In this book, I was both enlightened, entertained, and ticked-off at our government's policies regarding energy. Though people usually do not read Appendices, I recommend E and D; History of Technology and US Energy Timeline, respectively. Very, very revealing. Too bad Jimmy Carter picked the wrong nuclear reactor. France did not, and now they sell their excess energy to their neighbors in the European Union. Most of France's electricity, incidentally, comes from nuclear power plants. That one fact, is like so many other truths in this book. The Energy Gap is a must read for all of us who care about human destiny, and choosing the best energy source for the future of our species.

Excellent book
By Paul Burtwistle
A very good book on the impending energy crisis that many of the worlds developed countries are likely to suffer from due to their implementation of green energy policies. The book highlights the failures of the policies and the science behind them in a very clear manner.
It also addresses means to over come the issues and provide mankind with the lasting energy supply that modern life requires.

Good Source With Some Defects
By Crosslands
The authors Doug Hoffman and Allen Simmons have written a very interesting book on energy and how humans can use the physical phenomenon. The authors in their book describe the various sources of energy, their historical development, how they are used, and their advantages and disadvantages. Hydrocarbon fuels, renewable energy, and nuclear fuels are all included. The chapters on nuclear energy are particularly good. The authors describe the major six proposed Generation IV nuclear reactors which have the potential in the future to meet the energy needs of humanity, or in the authors words solve the problem of the energy gap, safely and efficiently. The writing is clear and interesting to the reader.

The authors also include very interesting and informative chapters on the energy grid, hybrid and electric cars, and energy conservation. The authors are to be praised for exposing the ideology and antics of the environmentalists. They demonstrate how the environmentalists oppose virtually all central generation of energy, whether nuclear, hydrocarbon or wind and solar. The environmentalists apparently want to destroy industrial civilization and limit humanity in the United States and elsewhere to cottage industry. This effort if successful would devastate human living conditions and lead to many deaths from starvation and disease.

The authors recommend the use of nuclear energy as a long term solution the problem of the energy gap or energy shortage. This view point is very well supported by all available evidence.

However there are some problems with this work. First the authors assume that hydrocarbon fuels were made from decayed fossils. Thus they neglect the vast and growing evidence for the abiogenic theory of hydrocarbon fuels. In this theory the hydrocarbon fuels form from the heat and pressure inside the planet earth and are pushed upward. Rising upward the fuels pick up molecules of decayed fossils in the process. As for supporting evidence, one moon of Saturn, Titan, has large amounts of hydrocarbon fuels on its surface and in its atmosphere. Planets in our solar system contain carbon compounds in their atmospheres. This and more evidence is presented in Thomas Gold The Deep Hot Biosphere : The Myth of Fossil Fuels as well as other sources.

Then the authors are overly concerned about the effect of anthropogenic (man made) carbon dioxide in warming the climate. Atmospheric carbon dioxide only reflects infrared radiation of certain frequencies. In most of these frequencies the much more prevalent water vapor also reflects infrared radiation. The filter effect means that each unit of carbon dioxide added to the atmosphere has less effect than the unit added before it. And humans account for under four percent of the total carbon dioxide in the atmosphere (see Steve Goreham Climatism!: Science, Common Sense, and the 21st Century's Hottest Topic). And carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has tended to decline over the geologic earth periods. Scientist and climate expert William Happer narrates that the earth's carbon dioxide levels in the last millennia have been at historic lows. Moreover carbon dioxide does not stay in the atmosphere forever. The true scientific estimates of the half life of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are fifteen years or less.

Another defect in the work is the lack of a bibliography, which would very helpful to the reader in such a broad topic like energy.

Yet despite its defects the book is very good and readable. The book is recommended.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, by L. Frank Baum

"The road to the City of Emeralds is paved with yellow brick," said the Witch, "so you cannot miss it. When you get to Oz do not be afraid of him, but tell your story and ask him to help you."

One of the best-known stories of all time, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz—often shortened to The Wizard of Oz—is a timeless classic. Written as a children's book, it has captured the hearts and minds of generations and can be read and enjoyed at any age. The story chronicles the adventures of a young girl named Dorothy Gale in the Land of Oz, after being swept away from her Kansas farm home in a storm. There she makes her way to the Emerald City, along the way famously meeting the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodsman, and Cowardly Lion, all desperate to meet the infamous Wizard who they believe has the power to grant their most desired wishes. All Dorothy wants is to go home—but there are no ruby slippers here—they were an embellishment added to the 1939 MGM movie. This storyhas been translated widely andits huge success led to Baum writing a further13books based in the Land of Oz.

Amazon.com Review
For many of us, the adventures of Dorothy in Oz will forever be associated not with Judy Garland singing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" but with W. W. Denslow's exceedingly odd line drawings for the original editions of Baum's Oz series. The Viennese artist Lisbeth Zwerger, however, goes a long way toward providing a new and refreshed set of images for the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, and the humbug wizard. These illustrations are often cockeyed, with occasional realistic details thrown in, like a crow with a corncob in its beak in the first portrait of the Scarecrow. The characters have a poignance and oddity that escaped the makers of the Oz movie.

From Publishers Weekly
Viennese illustrator and Hans Christian Andersen Medalist Lisbeth Zwerger takes a fresh look at L. Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz in a large-format edition. Zwerger's fantastical, delicate, eccentric illustrations bear no resemblance to the vision of the movie; they make the classic tale new again. And readers can view the Emerald City through a pair of green-tinted glasses, provided in the back of the book.

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-7-One of a series of books-on-cassette that are abridged and performed as a play, this was produced to coincide with the re-release of the movie. However, this recording follows the book, not the film. The differences are significant. The book is set inside the frame of gray Kansas, but the film makes that frame much more important than it is in the book. There are no hired hands, and the witchy neighbor does not threaten Toto before the tornado comes. When Dorothy returns from Oz, she lands in a field outside the new house her aunt and uncle built while she was gone, and all Aunt Em says is, "Where in the world did you come from?" This narrow frame makes the story of the journey to Oz the only focus of the story. There are also some new characters to meet that were left out of the film. The recording is technically excellent, with expressive voices and sparingly used music and sound effects. A narrator fills in the gaps where description is necessary. This will be a popular addition to library shelves, although librarians should be prepared to answer questions about the differences.

I know you're all wondering, "how does she know the correct order?" Is she over 100yrs old? Well, I know because my grandmother, gone for 34 yrs now, had each and every book bought hot of the presses. Inside each book, except the first, are the previous books in order. Also a couple of the names have changed a bit since they were first written but I have the Books of Wonder titles in this list.
So, here they are in correct order.

A true delight for Oz fans!
By Sheila L. Beaumont
This beautiful, oversize, lavishly illustrated Centennial Edition of L. Frank Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" is a cornucopia of enjoyment for Oz fans. Edited by Oz expert Michael Patrick Hearn, it's annotated in a manner similar to Martin Gardner's "Annotated Alice" (Gardner contributes a preface outlining the history of the "The Annotated Wizard of Oz").
There's a hundred-page introduction, with lots of photos and color illustrations, covering Baum's life, his family, his non-Oz books, and the history of the Oz phenomenon (books, plays, musicals, movies, other Oz authors, and much more).
The story itself is reproduced from the 1900 edition. W.W. Denslow's original illustrations, including all 24 color plates, are here too. Hearn's notes are entertaining, informative and very extensive. For example, there are three double-columned pages dealing with Baum's brief one-page introduction alone!
Anyone who loves the Oz books will find countless hours of pleasure in this delightful book. It's well worth the price!

The ORIGINAL Wizard of Oz is Published
By Sam A. Milazzo
I don't own THIS particular Edition, but I will soon, and as soon as I saw it in Dymmocks, I looked through it and thought "I've really gotta get this book!" And this is why . . . .
I'm sure that there are those of you who have the annotated Wizard of Oz and/or the Dover editions of the Wonderful/Wizard of Oz (Dover has made different copies in publishing it in different ways). the Annotated Wizard of Oz may have the pictures in full-colour, but the colour plates are in 1 whole place, in the middle of the book, and that goes the same for the recent Dover Edition of the Wonderful Wizard of Oz (where Dorothy is wearing a pink dress, talking to her friends, all wearing the Green glasses). The other Dover editions of this story have the pictures in black-and-white (sometimes all, other times, a few of them) with the colour-plates in their own chapter but in black-and-white.
THIS EDITION - the 100th Anniversary Edition - is one everybody should have. It has all the pictures in colour-and-black lined with the FULL-COLOUR-Plates in their OWN PROPER CHAPTER place, e.g. "She caught Toto by the ear" in THE CYCLONE, "I am the Witch of the North" in THE COUNCIL WITH THE MUNCHKINS, etc. It even has the picture of Dorothy and Toto back in Kansas on the very final page on the book in the backboard. And when you pull off this picture-cover (the one that you see now), the actual cardboard-leather-bound cover has the EXACT SAME ORIGINAL Cover Angela Lansbury shows in "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: The Making of a Movie Classic", where the Cowardly Lion is wearing the Green glasses on the Front cover, Toto is on the spine and the back has the faces of Dorothy, the Scarecrow and (Nick chopper) the Tin Woodman in circles.
An Important Note on this story is that it Is Imaginative But it Is Not DARK as some people say. It is not scary nor is it supposed to be attempted that way in any new adaptation, nor should it always be made similar to MGM with constant references or musical scenes. This is an AMERICAN 1900 Story, it is not English/British like J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter, Tolkien's Hobbit/LofR or C. S. Lewis' Narnia - it is its own place!! Oz is a place where animals can talk, there are strange animals who are not mythical and never appeared in any other legends, wicked people are defeated by simple acts, by it accidentally-non-magical or magical, everybody is friends and the ordinary items of our world can have strong but simple magic.
Now matter how much the MGM Musical is loved, reading this book is worth it, because it explains how many of the events in Oz came to be when Dorothy arrived: how did the Tin Woodman come to be? How did and why do the Winged Monkeys obey the Wicked Witch of the West? What became of the Winkies after the WWWitch's death? Did Lion become the King of Beasts again? Naturally the musical is different from the book, but despite the change of the Kansas beginning/ending, the story is basically the same. this book only offers MORE than the movie did.
Hope you enjoyed my descriptive review. Watch out for my other Oz and Digimon reviews (by Sam A. Milazzo).

From School Library Journal
Grade 6-9 In his anti-nuclear book, Paulsen does not explore the holocaust's aftermathhe just shows the promise of youth unfolding and stops it with a powerful "CLICK"the sound of the bomb being dropped. Paulsen interweaves the developing stories of four teenagers with vignettes about veterans of three wars. The focus storiesa Native American girl denies the heritage that her grandfather tries to force upon her; an illegal alien looks for a better life as a migrant worker; a Montana farm girl tries to convince her father that the farm offers her the life that she wants; and a teenage rock star shuns the lure of drugs to hone his soundare not completely satisfying as the protagonists are more archetypical than real. The self-contained war vignettes concern Lucky, who loves the fury of battle until his limbs are blown off in Vietnam; a farm boy fighting in World War II whose hopes and dreams are destroyed by the schrapnel that severs his spinal cord; and a sharpshooter, sent to Korea, who is destroyed by the terrible need to kill children who are assisting in the massacre of his unit. This emotionally charged story in particular is beautifully crafted and stunningly written. The final vignette focuses on a Bengal tiger and her cub as a flash starts World War III, and all of these lives are gonenot just the young men who fight for their country, but the young (and old) everywhere. Paulsen concentrates on depicting a generation struggling to realize its future, unaware of impending disaster, and he manages to involve readers despite the rigid, choppy format. The ending doesn't work within the structure of the book, but it does serve to emphasize the effects of nuclear war on innocents. Anne Connor, Los Angeles Public Library

VIgnettes of Human Vulnerabilty and Dignity
By A Customer
This is an unusual book--definitely not a novel, for the plot is non-existant. The storyline alternates among 4 teenagers and 3 veterans of different wars--none of whom meet each other. According to the Summary, there is a theme which provides commonality/literary glue (see Heading) but even that is somewhat obscure. The chapters are short and read quickly. Master story-teller Paulsen held my interest because I kept waiting for the four protagonists to interact and solve the world's problems--or at least their own.
But it was not to be, which lead to my frustration and disappointment. If he just wanted to write good short stories, he could have rearranged them, so that readers would realize when the end had been reached about a specific young adult. Nor did I notice any thread of nuclear disaster, as proclaimed on the back of the book. I found human vulnerability and dignity, as these young people sought meaning and direction in their lives. All four pursued th! eir goals differently, but it was unfortuate that they never knew of each other's dilemmas, so they could learn from each other's experience. A sad commentary on the social isolation of the teen years. Knowing the heights to expect from Paulsen, I felt cheated.

Captivating Characters

The intrigues of royalty and nobility make life complicated and perilous for Kate, but she keeps her vow to King Richard whom she had loved from afar. In the rugged country of Yorkshire, Kate and the boy Richard (rightful heir to the throne) guard their secret well.

With the help of Eagar, who came with them at the behest of the king, Kate rejuvenates the run-down estate of her husband, Lord Mellor, whom she knows only by reputation. Even though she is only eighteen, she had learned how to manage a household and servants during her years at court with a querulous queen.

Mellorsdale estate prospers. However, it becomes the property of the crude warrior Welshman Efan Caradoc by edict of the new king Henry Tudor after King Richard and Lord Mellor are killed and the war is lost.

Kate had also learned the art of plotting, planning, and scheming. With the help of Edgar and the abbot, she keeps Richard safe, but the price is high. She pays with her freedom to keep Richard from being sent away to be a page and to keep herself from being sent to a convent.

Efan Caradoc, son of a kitchen wench, has no idea who his father is. He survived only by being meaner than the brutes that mistreated him all his life until he grew big and tough. Having proven himself a loyal and winning warrior and leader, he is awarded Mellorsdale.

Uneducated, with no knowledge of the rugged, inhospitable Yorkshire country and with no experience managing an estate, Efan resents Kate's abilities, but needs her help. Thus, begins an uneasy relationship as Kate and Efan struggle with life in tumultuous times. From two vastly different backgrounds, they suffer hurts, emotional upheavals, and share breathtaking moments of intimacy, but Efan declares there is not such thing as love. How they bridge the gape in their beliefs and reach their happy-ever-after makes Dangerous Enchantment a tension-filled, page-turner.

Margaret Blake's captivating characters and her descriptions along with a plot that keeps the reader's rapt attention make Dangerous Enchantment good reading.

A Sure Winner
By John R. Lindermuth
A common belief, fostered by literature and film, is that Richard III, last of the Plantagenet, was a villain and may have been responsible for the murder of his own nephews. A number of writers and historians have advanced alternate theories, showing Richard as a just and honest ruler and attributing the deaths of the princes to others or dismissing it as a vile rumor spread by supporters of the dastardly Tudors.

Dangerous Enchantment offers another alternate theory in which the younger prince, Richard, Duke of York, survives and is protected by the lady in waiting of the king's wife and other loyal servants.

Kate accedes to Richard's command and marries Lord Mellor, going into hiding at his Yorkshire estate where the young duke is passed off as her stepson, scion of her husband. After Richard and Mellor are killed at Bosworth, Kate and her ward hope to escape to Burgundy with other loyalists.

But, before they can do so, Efan Caradoc, a Welsh supporter of the Tudor, arrives with his retinue and inform them he has been awarded the property of her deceased husband. The bastard son of a kitchen wench, Caradoc and Kate clash at first. Eventually both succumb to love, which sets the stage for other dangerous conflicts.

As a supporter of the good Richard theory, I was intrigued by Margaret Blake's version which offers captivating characters, an action-packed plot with plenty of twists and suspense, including a reasonable explanation for the fate of the younger Richard. Throw in the spicy romantic development and you've got a sure winner.

Hiding Richard leads to love...Excellent read!
By ****
A young woman promises to protect the next heir of the throne after the outcome of the WAR OF THE ROSES. Quickly married to an earl before the final battle, she hides at his estate with the boy. After the earl's death and as a reward for service, Henry bestows the land to a Welsh Lord. The conflict between the lord and lady starts from the first and becomes a battle between them, even after they are married. A very tense read to an interesting ending.

Excerpt from Electro-Horticulture

Electricity is analogous to heat and light, and, like them, has an influence upon the growth of plants. What this is, it is the purpose of the author to inquire into with his readers by presenting to them a summary of what has been accomplished in the comparatively new science of electro-horticulture, and by discussing with them the rationale of the action of electricity upon vegetation.

That he may afford assistance to some who are already at work, and possibly influence others to investigate into this fascinating subject, is his sole motive in offering to the public this monograph.

He has had in view the popular rather than the scientific aspect of the subject, and hence has limited himself to what he felt would most appeal to the average reader.

By Sylvia Bender
Not sure if I'm rating the same book as the other raters, but I found his book to be waaaaay tiresome. Gill is knowledgeable, but long-winded. A more apt title for this book might be "101 Ways to Say the Same Thing in a Slightly Different Way." (Warning! reading this book may cause drowsiness. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery after reading!). Could benefit from a robust editing, otherwise not a good choice for 1st semester students. By contrast, the Peter Northouse book, "Introduction to Leadership: Concepts and Practice;" compact, easy to read, "spot on" (wink, wink KM) and delightful!

Comprehensive and Up to Date
By Michael P.
This is a learner's gem! At the beginning of each chapter, it does a wonderful outline of what one will see in the body of the chapter, thus helping reading and learning. Each chapter is neatly and helpfully subdivided. Anyone wanting a substantial and up-to-date overview of Leadership - from an ACADEMIC, not experiential or casual perspective - would find this book really helpful. I thought I'd resell my copy, but nope! I'm keeping it!
