MTG Novels Coming Back - Thank Beyer

With the last two MTG block novels being very, very poor, and the demise of the publication of books, the Magic players interested in the story as well as the game were left in the cold. Thankfully members of the development stepped up to save the lore from the abyss and with the new eBook "The Secretist - Pt 1" we the community have been thrown back into what made Magic greater than other games - the story told by the cards.
This installment of lore comes at a perfect time, the Return to Ravnica - our most beloved plane. The initial books had set a masterful stage for the story of the Guilds and with tastes of Ravnica in previous works such as "Agents of Artifice" many community members were eager to see the story of our return played out.
Then the novels were canceled.
Thankfully Doug Beyer took up a mantle of authority and wrote a very fine work regarding the events of the new block in so far as we've been introduced.
With Beyer's last work being the well written but scattered "Alara Unbroken" it was refreshing to see that despite the 'chapters' in "The Secretist" jumping plot lines, it does not jerk around so much as to give whiplash. The characters are well defined and recalled from previous work and the plotting fits a very well crafted story that never gets away from the reader. There are clearly defined antagonists, and a very clear goal, despite the fact the entire "prize" is shrouded in mystery.
Though short, the entire feel is rewarding, setting up the next installments, though hopefully the large gaps in between the releases do not impact the story flow.
A very reasonable price and a very enjoyable read for an afternoon, this is what the Magic community deserves in the form of the written tale - a clear description of the events regarding the sets and a well crafted story for us to follow through the cards.
Buy this. Show Wizards there is a desire for the lore and I have no doubt we will receive more amazing installments like "The Secretist."

Solid return to Magic novels

A very fine novella (short), covering the exploits of Jace Beleren while on Ravnica during the new rise of the guilds after the guildpact fell (in the original trilogy).

While this book is short, it's worthwhile for any magic story enthusiast. Much better written than any of the last two novels, and I'm glad to see the return of novels for Magic: The gathering in a well written manner.

If you're curious about Ravnica lore, or like Jace, this is a good buy, especially for the price!

The story behind the cards

It's great to see the story behind the block spelled out. While these novellas will not compete with classics of fantasy literature, I doubt they are meant to. They simply fill in some details and provide some entertainment relating to the most recent MTG block. And for the price, you are getting your money's worth and more. So if you are a fan of the game, and if you have at least a bit of a Vorthos streak (http://wiki.mtgsalvation.com/article/Psychographic_profile#Vorthos), this book will hit the spot.

Thabit Ibn Qurra, the 9th century author of De Imaginibus, truly deserves the title of sage.� A master of all the arts and sciences of his day, Thabit translated many books of science and philosophy from Greek and Syriac to Arabic.� While still famed as a scientist, Thabit also was renowned as a master mage and astrologer.� De Imaginibus, "On Images" or more loosely, "How to Make Astrological Talismans" is a famous work of astrological magic, explaining in detail how to make the most difficult type, the house based talisman.

The text of De Imaginibus was translated by John Michael Greer, a noted contemporary mage and head of the Ancient Order of Druids.� Astral High Magic, includes not one, but two different translations of De Imaginibus, from two different manuscripts.� It also includes corresponding passages from the Renaissance mage Cornelius Agrippa's Three Books of Occult Philosophy.

I felt that having translations, as good as these are, was not enough, commentary and explanation was required, in order for readers to really grasp the meaning and import of De Imaginibus.� Having revived traditional astrological magic for the 21st century, I felt it was important to share my insights on this key text so I have included extensive explanatory commentary and footnotes

Thabit Ibn Qurra's De Imaginibus is one of the most important texts on astrological magic, being cited by not only the most famous of texts on the subject, Picatrix, but also by Henry Cornelius Agrippa in his monumental De Occulta Philosophia Libri Tres. Astral High Magic is based on Latin critical edition of Francis Carmody and includes both Latin versions of the text, I and J, as well as Agrippa's paraphrases.

De Imaginibus is, in fact, a very short text, with each version being well under the 74 pages of Astral High Magic. It is, however, a very dense treatise on the subject of creating astrological talismans and talismanic statues. It includes nine chapters and an introduction, with each chapter describing the methods used to create various kinds of talismans. At first glance, the talismans in question appear to be for relatively petty purposes such gaining a lover, making money, destroying entire cities; that sort of thing. In truth, ibn Qurra is providing a complete and methodological overview of how talismans should be created according to the dictates of astrology.

As I said, the brief text is dense and it is in no way a beginner's textbook. Without a strong comprehension of traditional astrological methods, including the casting and reading of natal, horary and electional charts, De Imaginibus almost completely useless. These techniques are not given by ibn Qurra, it is assumed the reader already knows them. From the perspective of a 9th century CE Sabian intellectual and esotericist, this is entirely reasonable. Anyone capable of reading classical texts in Sabian society should also be familiar with astrology. The same, unfortunately, cannot necessarily be said about today's intellectual elite.

The techniques for casting and reading charts are not the only things ibn Qurra leaves out of De Imaginibus. Though he makes constant reference to the creation of images, he gives very few examples of such images. Readers familiar with Picatrix or De Occulta Philosophia know that there are in fact hundreds, if not thousands, of images associated with the stars, planets and zodiac. This is precisely why ibn Qurra leaves them out. Once again, any contemporary reading De Imaginibus would likely already be aware of the proper methods for creating astrological images. Ibn Qurra's concern is not the designing of the images, but the proper timing for creating the talismans proper.

For those not as intimately familiar with traditional astrology, it is Christopher Warnock's commentary on the text that makes this book truly useful. Warnock is a well known traditional astrologer and practitioner of pre-Enlightenment astrological magic. Though sometimes lacking in punctuation and perhaps in need of an occasional editor, Warnock's commentary is insightful and extraordinarily useful for understanding the book in its proper context.

Though Astral High Magic boasts a steep price for its few pages, it is one of the foundational texts Medieval and Renaissance astrological magic. Further, De Imaginibus is one of the few surviving examples of the complexity of the ancient art, moving far beyond the use of magical hours and days. Any magician interested in this source of traditional magic should be more than happy to have this book on their shelf.

Sexy Intelligentsia

Deleuze's work is complex and often difficult, especially for the reader who comes with an interest in art, music, and literature but little familiarity with (or perhaps tolerance for) late-twentieth century philosophy.
In this study of Deleuze's writing on music and painting, Ronald Bogue distills the essence of the philosopher's decades-long interest in these disciplines. This is no "Deleuze for Dummies"--some familiarity with Deleuzian concepts is assumed and expected. As with similar texts (Harari's _How James Joyce Made His Name: A Reading of the Final Lacan_, for example, or Rochlitz's _The Disenchantment of Art: The Philosophy of Walter Benjamin_), _Deleuze on Music, Painting, and the Arts_ tells us probably as much about Bogue as it does about Deleuze.
This is useful, however, because Bogue has read widely and with comprehension not only in Deleuze but in the whole network of related subject matter touching on his concerns--Jacob von Uexkull, Susan Oyama, Paul Griffiths and Alois Riegl among others. Additionally, Bogue's consideration of Modern music is exemplary for its clear-sighted and vivid engagement with difficult (what Adorno might even call radical) music. Take as an example this brief segment from the discussion of Messiaen's spectacular _Catalogue d'oiseaux_: "...Messiaen never approaches an individual bird's song in isolation, but instead juxtaposes it with the songs of other species and situates it within an evocative sonic landscape....Such pictorialism might suggest that Messiaen's aesthetic is purely mimetic, but the actual results of his practice belie this suspicion." He goes on to discuss the piece's motivic development and the composer's modal style.
Deleuze is at his most brilliant in the writings on Messiaen and Francis Bacon, and Bogue's book allows easier access for readers without the necessary time or desire to wade through thousands of pages to find what they're looking for. Of course, the ideas about music and painting are inextricable from the other ideas in those pages (there are, after all, 'a thousand plateaus', and it is not impossible that the reader may feel the need to explore further to obtain a more complete understanding--which is, after all, not such a bad thing....)
At the beginning of the twenty-first century we could do worse than immerse ourselves in a study of Deleuze. For the student of music and art, as well as for those interested in expanding their knowledge of one of the great thinkers of that long, dark, and now late century, this is a valuable book.

Awesome and informative!

What can I say? Perry Stone can write a great and informative book, he surprised me, as I don't watch very many Christians who have ministry's on TV. But Perry Stone ranks tops with me (along with Zola Levitt, Joel Rosenberg, Dr. Michael Brown, Jewish Voice with Jonathan Bernis & the show entitled: The Jewish Jesus) and had I not known, I would have thought this guy was a fellow believing Hebrew in Yeshua! He's that good! Also, for any new believer in Christ, you've got to purchase 'Breaking the Jewish Code', as this will help you to better understand your Hebrew roots to your Christian faith, how you can take part in the covenant God made with Abraham, as well as examples of how God has blessed the Hebrew people throughout history!! It's something that is unfortunately simply not taught within mainstream American Christian denominations today and is even looked down upon or shunned. This book is awesome in explaining the Passover meal, what it means and how it can be a blessing in your life!! It's a great read and both these books have been a blessing in my life.

I would also encourage you to see the DVD that Perry Stone has produced about daily communion. It will change your opinions on communion only once in a while. Ok, but lines don't line up

I think it's a good idea for a book. The pages peel out of the building like in a notepad, but what is really disappointing is:
1. The printed lines on the sheets don't line up with where the creases go. The most annoying one is the line right down the "middle" of the page, which is supposed to line up if you fold the sheet in half, which is the first step of most planes. Unfortunately, and I'm not even sure how this is possible with modern printing machinery, that line is off by about 1/8" on every sheet, which means that after the very first fold you are already off. It's not the end of the world of course, but still. You'd think if they can do one thing right in this world by now, it would be that. Anyway, like I said it's a cute idea but they need to get their quality control up to snuff.

What led to this production was not a burning desire of the author to appear in print - as all who are well acquainted with him will readily admit - but a purely patriotic motive, that the history of our fatherland might not be lost in oblivion, especially as our old sires are fast dying out.

Educated natives of Yoruba are well acquainted with the history of England and with that of Rome and Greece, but of the history of their own country they know nothing whatever ! This reproach it is one of the author's objects to remove.

Whilst the author could claim to be a pioneer in an untrodden field, he can by ho means pretend to have exhausted the subject; but he hopes by this to stimulate among his more favoured brethren the spirit of patriotism and enquiry into the histories of the less known parts of the country. It may be that oral records are preserved in them which are handed down from father to son, as in the case of the better known Royal bards in the Metropolis, such records though imperfect should surely not be under-rated.

In the perusal of this feeble attempt, the author craves the forbearance of his readers ; he deprecates the spirit of tribal feelings and petty jealousies now rife among us. In recording events of what transpired, good or bad, failures and successes, among the various tribes, he has endeavoured to avoid whatever would cause needless offence to anyone, or irritate the feelings of those specially interested in the narratives, provided only that the cause of truth, and of public benefit be faithfully served.

With respect to the ancient and mythological period he has stated the facts as they are given by the bards, and with respect to the History of comparatively recent dates, viz., from the time of King Abiodun downwards, from eye-witnesses of the events which they narrate, or from those who have actually taken part in them. He has thus endeavoured to present a reliable record of events.

He is greatly indebted especially to the honoured David Kukomi, the patriarch of the Ibadan Church, (the now sainted father of the Rev. R. S. Oyebode). Kukomi was a young man in the days of King Abiodun, and it was his'fortune (or misfortune) to take part in the wars and other national movements of the period as a common soldier, and was thus able to give a clear and reliable account of the sayings, persons, and events of those stirring times, being a cool man of judgment, observant, and remarkably intelligent.

I love it, but it depends on if you are okay with a super cheesy book

Keep this in mind - if you are okay with a super cheesy book, then this is a fantastic short read. I have read the book twice:

1st time I read it was about 4 years ago and I hated it, I thought it was terrible lame.

2nd time I read it was a few months ago and it was an absolute blast. I loved it and highlighted a lot of the book. I just needed to be okay with the fact that the book is super cheesy.

If you can handle cheese, then this is a fantastic business/entrepreneur book!
