Not good enough

I know this review will be filed under the listing for the solutions manual, but I'm writing about both the text and the manual and, quite frankly, they share parallel flaws and errors. So here goes...

If there's anything enjoyable about Shriver and Atkins' "Inorganic Chemistry" (5th ed), it's the presentation. Nice organization of material with broad scope and colorful figures. The book itself is relatively lightweight too. It certainly doesn't seem as though this text is a typical undergraduate chemistry book.

Unfortunately, that's a statement that applies as much to this book's flaws as it does its (few) strengths. Atkins' explanations are terse and lean, and his definitions of terms lack the clarity that a first-time student of inorganic chemistry - like myself - so often desperately needs. Examples are plentiful, but their 'solutions' vary between superfluous (and poorly - or even arrogantly - worded) and insufficient, and most end-of-chapter exercises and problems are either unclear in their desired solutions or only tangentially related to the 'skills' (whatever they're supposed to be - the text does very little to build up problem solving skills) presented in each chapter.

Which also brings me to the solutions manual, where one unfortunately finds even more flaws: not just lean explanations, but also plenty of errors and mistaken assumptions that could easily have been resolved had the manual's authors bothered to re-read what they wrote one more time. (For a glaring example, find a copy - don't buy one if you don't have to! - and consult the solution for Exercise 1.2. (The good news: the book's website has a free PDF of solutions to the self-tests and exercises.) Don't panic if you somehow find your arithmetic disagreeing with the authors'; it really should be 102.) I'm starting to suspect that Shriver and/or Atkins deleted whatever this other team had to offer and wrote in the solutions themselves.

Unlike many of the other reviewers who have posted their opinions here, I can't offer any alternative texts for Shriver and Atkins' version. But if you're looking to learn from a good text, look elsewhere.

Repetitive,

Pros: Nice pictures, some fun random chemical information. The first few chapters are OK.

Cons: The text is repetitive with no coherent narrative or intellectual structure to most of the chapters. It is painfully boring -- I love chemistry, I even like reading chemistry textbooks, but this book puts me to sleep. The solution manual has many significant errors -- totally unacceptable! For most topics, the intellectual depth is low. There is an enormous amount of detailed information, but a lot of it is uselessly specific, and the few truly useful nuggets of information get lost in the sea of irrelevant information.

Overall, the book is hampered by trying simultaneously to give lots of detail and not going in-depth enough conceptually. So, I end up skimming the chapters and ultimately giving up in disgust. There's probably only 20-30 pages of really good discussion, distributed unevenly throughout the text.

I don't know of a better introductory inorganic book, but it can't get much worse than this.

Worst textbook I have ever used!

As my title describes, I am completely dissatisfied with this book. It it vaguely written. It does not clearly and concisely explain concepts or questions. It is written as if it is NOT an introductory textbook. It assumes you know principles that an introductory student does not know, which contributes to the poor explanations. The practice questions in the book are vague as well. Most of the time, it is difficult to understand what is even being asked and the wording is confusing rather than clear and to the point. There are multiple mistakes in the book and answer key (the answer key has most of the mistakes and explains things with concepts not even described in the book, but I'll save its comments for its own review). I would not recommend this book. I would actually strongly discourage it and recommend "Inorganic Chemistry" by Gary Miessler or Catherine Housecroft.

Gottlieb argues that the modern conception of the family (mom, dad, and the kids) stems from the 19th century when industrialization drove people out of rural areas and into cities. Before that, from the time of the Black Death until the end of the 18th century, families had many different forms. She also argues that we are once again seeing the emergence of new kinds of families, e.g., households headed by gay couples, single-mothers, etc.

Families have always looked just like they do now! Right?

"The Family in the Western World" proves to be a fast read that does not insult one's intelligence. The author knows how to grab the reader's attention with relevant detail, crisp writing and punctuated revelations of fact. Anyone who would like to learn more about how the institution of "family" has evolved over the centuries needs to read this book. Our culture's current angst over what constitutes a family might be ameliorated if the proponents of the various suggested types of families spend some time with this book learning about historical similarities and differences which can be either found or reflected or discounted in our practices. Those who hold the proposition that a valid marriage is made so by a presiding religious person might, perhaps, be surprised to discover that in Europe, when it was much more religious than it is today, the presence of a religious person conducting a wedding unto marriage was not required except in certain places and in certain times, mostly in the premodern/modern times. The Process of Elimination

Ten Little Indians / And Then There Were None

There is a classic murder mystery story known as "the locked room mystery". Someone is found murdered in a room locked from the inside. No one could have left the room! How did it happen? In this story the locked room is an island where no one can enter or leave. The ten people on this island are murdered one by one. An old nursery rhyme of "ten little Indians" provides a blueprint for the mysterious deaths. Logically, the last survivor would be the presumed murderer, by the process of elimination. But what if this assumption was wrong? It may not sound rational but this story makes it appear so.

Ten people are invited or hired to visit Indian Island off the coast of Devon. After a good meal there is a recorded voice that accuses them of murder. The visitors begin dying off in the manner of that nursery rhyme. After searching the island they realize the murderer is one of the guests! Knowing this does not prevent more deaths. This story keeps your interest until the very end. Scotland Yard cannot figure out the solution until a message was found in a bottle at sea. The movie version modified and enhanced this story. No plan is ever perfect because of the many things that can happen.

This is an example of the classic English murder mystery. The murder exists to provide an intellectual puzzle to entertain the reader. The participants are mostly the middle-class, not average people. The scene is in a large house owned by a rich man. Raymond Chandler pointed out the differences in his essay "The Simple Art of Murder". Most murders occur because of lust or greed, to get it or to keep it. Chandler commented on the highly artificial murder plots which multiply clues that experienced detectives would see through. I found a clue in Chapter IX (but I had seen the movie decades ago).

Chapter XI references one locked room mystery in America. An old gentleman and his wife were killed with an axe. The maid couldn't have done it; the respectable middle-aged daughter was acquitted. No other explanation was ever found. Who killed them? [Arnold Brown's book explains it was done by someone who was kept hidden.]

This book delves into the heart and soul of the functioning of government: measuring performance and managing risk...from the perspective of combating terrorist financing, money laundering and tax evasion. The book is centered around financial intelligence units - strengths and weaknesses of a number of FIUs around the world are discussed. Each is dissected on the basis of business process, customer relations, human resources development and need for financial investment. The book nicely creates a ranking system of performance metrics in terms of usefulness. The author has done an outstanding job in bringing together so many experts of a variety of backgrounds from the public and private sectors, and academia. This all-in-one book is an exploration of the past with a prediction of the future. It discusses the future status of suspicious transaction reports, the costs and benefits of the anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing regimes, and how the government can improve its relationship with financial institutions in, both, developed countries and the developing world.
