This book is one of my personal favourites, even among the works of Jack Higgins.
The discovery of old photographs of British war hero Harry Martineau dressed in a Nazi uniform serves as the starting point for this fast-paced historical thriller. Set on the Channel Islands during the Second World War, "Night of the Fox" revolves around Martineau's assembly of a team of doppelgangers who, posing as an elite German squad, are sent to retrieve a captured British officer - a man who knows the exact time and place of the Allied invasion of France. Things fall apart when one of Martineau's men drowns and is discovered to be wearing a R.A.F. uniform under his German one. Higgins skilfully keeps the story moving forward, and the remembered tale of heroism and sacrifice is told with just a hint of nostalgia, in a tone appropriate to the sad chain of events its heroes endure.

Warm World War II Adventure

It's near the end of World War II, and Hugh Kelso is an American officer who knows important information about the pending invasion in France when his boat is sunk in the English Channel. His rescue raft washes up on the shore of the isle of Jersey, which is presently under German occupation. Hugh is lucky to be rescued by Helen de Ville, a Jersey resident who hides him in her home and gets a message to the Allies that she has him. A rescue team is sent, as it is imperative that Hugh Kelso be kept out of German hands because of the information he has about the invasion.

The British send in Harry Martineau, who can perfectly imitate a German officer and has nerves of steel, and young Sarah Drayton, a nurse who can pass for his French girlfriend who also happens to be Helen de Ville's niece. With their forged papers, Harry a/k/a Standartenfuhrer Max Vogel and Sarah fly to France to meet with the Resistance there, and then go on to Jersey to play their parts. At the same time, Field Marshall Erwin Rommel needs to be in two places at once, so he sends an imposter to Jersey to take his place. Rommel's double and Standartenfuhrer Vogel cross paths and make each other nervous, and Vogel has also raised some suspicions with the powers that be on Jersey.

The story moves from Rommel's imposter, to Harry and Sarah and their friends at de Ville Place, to the German contingent on the island, and cruises along at an easy pace while the danger slowly builds. Things happened that I knew were going to cause trouble, yet the story ambled along in an easy manner, which kept me turning the pages and eagerly anticipating being able to pick it back up every time I had to put it down. I've always enjoyed a good World War II story, and Jack Higgins seems to have a special flair for the era. I not only felt like I was right there on Jersey, but in the rooms with these characters, who were all warm, real people I would want to know. There's something incredibly romantic about the World War II era, with the black market, the bartering, the danger, and the basic lifestyle most people were reduced to as the world at large went off the rails. This book in particular showed a glimpse of life under occupation, and the wonderful human spirit that can prevail in such conditions. Though Jack Higgins has been writing books for a long time, I'm fairly new to them, and I consider myself lucky that there are so many more waiting for me.

The Author Could Do More

If you have read some of the authors books in the past you have a good idea of what you are going to get. An easy to read and understandable book that is full of action. Because of this I am starting to stay away from his books because I am looking for books with a little more depth. With that said I did fall back into my old habits and read this after picking it up at a sale. He really delivers on a fast paced action book and it seams like he is trying to expand some and use more main characters. For a Higgins book this is pretty good, I am still giving it a bit of a knock because I think with as much experience as the author has he could give us more character development.

Most in depth

and most true to the Word I have ever read in that I do not believe there is any private interpretation or guessing as there is often with other authors. This book while weighty is very clear and easy to read yet it is somewhat difficult to assimilate fully, I believe it is because of the great scope of the subject and its demands (spiritual as well as mental) on the reader rather than any defect of the author. Well worth the substantial effort to read.

Office 2016 Simplified

I seriously like this new Office 2016 Simplified guide. I’ve been using MS Office long enough to have had a long forgotten love/hate relationship with “Clippy,” that dancing office assistant from MS Word ’97 on my first computer after I finally abandoned word processors and typewriters. MS Office and Windows updates always make me feel a little disoriented, as if I’ve come to visit a place I used to live for the first time after a long absence and I know where I want to go but all the roads and sights are different and I can’t get there the way I used to. I also have that “use it or lose it” syndrome, so programs I don’t use often enough I can’t quite remember how to do what I want to do in. I love the Simplified series because they help me shake off the disorientation and help me find my way around again.

This book is well written and organized, and has information for Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher, and OneNote. It makes use of color tabs, bold and/or italic text, and screen shots to help you find what you need and draw your eyes to where they need to look to help you organize and use your data and complete the tasks you want to complete. The color tabs at the top help separate the chapters into sections, for example the chapters on Excel all have light purple tabs that you can look through for help with Excel. Colorful screenshots mimic what you might see on the screen while using the program, relevant text is bolded with colored buttons which pair up with matching colored pointer buttons on the screen shot so that you can read the instructions you need and immediately draw your eye over to a screen shot where you would enter the information or click. There are also notes that offer additional information or alert you to particular conditions that can happen and may want to avoid and in some places cross reference to other parts of the book.

I can see why some people might feel like this book is oversimplified, but seriously I just want to do what I need to do and move on. I keep this book and The Windows 10 book handy as I work on the computer. I got a second set to keep at work and my co-workers are constantly popping over to borrow them as well. This Simplified Office 2016 book is my new go-to book for MS Office use, it’s a pleasure to use and definitely recommended.

Too Simplified

Some good stuff here. Color coding, lots of screen shots, covers Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, OneNote, on and on. But there are some big downsides. It's Windows only. Apple or Mac aren't even in the index. It's dry. And it's too simplified. For example, there's also no mention of 'dropbox' in the index. Only of real use if you've never used these classic software packages. So while it's fine, it greatly suffers in comparison to the many other guides that are just a click away on Amazon. Hope you find this review helpful.

I teach computers to elementary school kids. Each year, I try to teach them a little bit more about Office. I don't do Office all the time, but I've got 1st and 2nd graders doing PowerPoint at various skill levels. I'm ALWAYS looking for resources to teach them - and if those resources are adult-friendly so that my substitutes can use it too, then so much the better. And it helps when I end up being the go-to-guy when the other teachers have Office questions.

This book is perfect for all of my needs. It's NOT simple enough that I can just give it to the kids, but it IS structured enough that I can use it for my lesson plans. You're not going to be an Office wizard just by reading this book, but it WILL help you get a lot done using Office 2016.

I like that it's the most up to date version of Office. I like that it's VERY structured. I like that it's pretty simple to understand and use. This is a GREAT resource for anyone.

He did research at the University of London and was influenced by the famous mathematician George Polya at Stanford University. Stewart was most recently Professor of Mathematics at McMaster University, and his research field was harmonic analysis. Stewart was the author of a best-selling calculus textbook series published by Cengage Learning, including CALCULUS, CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS, and CALCULUS: CONCEPTS AND CONTEXTS, as well as a series of precalculus texts.

Most content in this is word for word the same as the first edition, which I already had to buy for Calculus I. Why should a student have to pay 300 dollars for copies of an almost identical book? Text book business models are ridiculous and shameful.

No Changes!

The only thing that is different with this edition is that the problem numbers have changed! Making it incompatible for homework! In any other industry, this would not be tolerated at all! Why does the textbook industry get to resell the same books for full price?!

Pretty Decent.

If you'll notice above, the description states it is a book meant to be as concise as possible, which I believe the author definitely achieved. However, this drive to be as small as possible without lacking 'essential' topics is cheating to the beginning calculus student. Concepts should be thoroughly explained and end of chapter questions should match or slightly exceed the level of difficulty of the explained concepts in the chapter - not heavily exceed it, this is where I took off a star. I understand that the goal of end of chapter questions is to challenge the student, but the lack of thorough explanations in an effort to be as concise as possible does not prepare the student for these questions, in my opinion. Therefore, I had to seek out other materials.

In the end, I found this book to laid out very well and amazingly, for a math book, somewhat easy to read. I supplemented this book with the Idiots Guide to Calculus, which was a life saver on certain topics and went even further with Stewart's Solution Manual for this book. The purchasing of these two additional books, I hope, may be an indicator of the lack of thoroughness for achieving as small a book as possible.

About the Author
Mike Mitchell is a well-regarded translator from German with a special interest in Austrian literature. He previously taught German at Stirling University. His translations for Dedalus include five novels by Gustav Meyrink, among others. His translation of Herbert Rosendorfer's Letters Back to Ancient China won the Shlegal-Tieck German Translation Prize. He lives in Scotland.

Delightful English translation, but NOT the complete novel

Mitchell's translation of Grimmelshausen's picaresque novel about a boy from SW Germany in the 1620s who has his life disrupted by the Thirty Years War, into which he is swept up for decades is delightfully funny. Unfortunately, Mitchell's version follows the commonly available (and artificially antiquated) Goodrick translation and omits the sixth book! Grimmelshausen wrote a whole cycle of ten novels revolving around Simplicissimus and other Thirty Years War characters, most of which are not readily available in a contemporary English translation. This, the core novel, is the most famous of the lot, but I can't help but feel disappointed by the lack of the sixth book, which was referenced by Borges (in "The Book of Imaginary Beings") and by others. I feel as though readers of "Don Quixote" must if they discover that they have read only the first part of his multi-part novel. The work of Cervantes, however, is much more readily available in English than is Grimmelshausen, so the absence is easily rectified; with the Simplicissimus books, however, one takes what one can get. Mitchell's translation of Books 1 - 5 is, fortunately, quite good, and there aren't any references in the first five books to events in the sixth book which would be weirdly jarring if the final book is missing, so there's no reason to feel cheated unless you KNOW that something has been left out. Mitchell's version is in good colloquial English and is a fast and satisfying read. I went through the whole book in a few days, finding it very difficult to put down. Mitchell writes so smoothly that the reader is swept breathlessly along just as Simplicissimus himself was.
This is THE classic novel of the Thirty Years War, which caused the death of one-third the population of Germany and involved almost every country from Sweden to Italy and from Spain to Russia, and -- strangely enough -- it's a comedy. Perhaps the war was so terrible that afterwards the only way for the survivors to stay sane was to laugh about the bitter joke which history played upon them. "Simplicissimus" is regarded by many as a definitive account of the mood and temperment of many of the survivors. Read it and laugh ... or weep. It's the story of Everyman and Everywoman caught up in an insane war in which the only option is make everything a joke, because the reality of the situation is too terrible to consider.

Classic Eye-Witness Account of the 30Years War.

Obviously, nobody here cared to tell you what this book is about. It's the story (some say it's autobiographical - some say it's not - The author has been a mercenary captain in the war) about a simple peasant-boy being torn into the chaos and suffering of one of Europe's longesr and THE most devastating war (half of the population in the area died). He gradually advances from being servant to being court-jester and becomes a warleader. The fascinating thing about this is:
a- Even after nearly 400 years it's easy to read.
b- Every aspect of war is described in (sometims painful) detail.
c- It's done by a man who's seen it all. So although it reads like a fantasy novel, it's authentic.

Excellent Book

One of the finest and funniest books I have ever read, I suggest to read along "Vida y Hechos de Estebanillo Gonzalez, Hombre de Buen Humor", also a XVII century rogue amidst the 30 years war!!. I find Grimmelhausen book very clever and defenitely a must to anybody who is interested in Europe. Unfortunately I do not read German so I miss many of the jokes, still the book is very well worth cover to cover. I am surprised that such a classic of the German Literature have not got a wider reputation: it is so amusing to read.
