This is a perfect book for someone who is learning Persian and wants to advance their knowledge of the language. The definitions are clear and the illustrations are very funny. I definitely recommend this book.

My wife is Persian and I have been learning Farsi here and there for the last couple of years. This book is exactly what I was looking for... each idiom has

- the Farsi spelling of each idiom _including_ the vowel marks, which normally are left out
- the transliteration just to double-check your pronunciation
- the English explanation of each phrase
- a sample usage
- and yes, last but not least, the cartoons, which are definitely smile-inducing.

It is not a huge book, but I am learning slowly so there is enough material in here to keep me busy for the rest of the year.

It will be difficult for a novice to follow this book alone. If you have already taken an introductory course in Farsi, or if you have a significant other/teacher to help you along and explain the conjugations etc, then it is actually a good learning aid, true to its title.

Winds Through the Odd Logic of Empowerment Like No Other

This is a fascinating book. Eliasoph compels us to think about what we didnt even realize was missing, and asks the questions no one dared or even thought to ask. Empowerment logics have come to dominate a multitude of forms - self-help books, AA classes, microfinance NGOs, American k-12 educational policy and programming. Eliasoph compels us to bring these logics into critical discourse - seeing lots of contradictions and false hopes, but also lots of moments of promise and success. An intriguing read for anyone who takes the ever-expanding global network of nonprofits seriously (as we all should) or has served as a well-meaning volunteer; absolutely indispensable for anyone working within or hoping to start an NGO.

Our favorite Steig

"Amos and Boris" isn't as celebrated as some other classic Steigs (like "Sylvester and the Magic Pebble" or "Brave Irene" or "The Amazing Bone"), and you won't find it on a Scholastic DVD, but all things considered, this is my favorite Steig (which is saying a lot-- Steig is my all-time favorite children's book writer). It has typical Steigian touches--the elevated diction (I love how Steig never talks down to children), the confrontation with mortality that seems to be a feature in so many Steig texts--but it is sweeter and more moving than most, a celebration of a very unlikely friendship. The friends, a sea-faring mouse named Amos and a whale named Boris, both improbably save each other's lives. The language here is Steig at his best (at one point the whale, being rolled down the beach by two elephants, is described as "breaded with sand"). Steig fans and parents on the hunt for a great children's book should certainly add this to their collection. Our three year old daughter is a big fan.

A lesser known, but still valuable Steig classic

I love this book, and feel that William Steig is one of the most underrated and insightful children's authors. I have asked many people who have children that I know whether they have read any of his books, and the usual answer I receive is "no". What literature they have been missing out on! My son really enjoys this book, and it is one of the first books with a substantial amount of text on each page that I have been able to convince him to sit still to hear (he's almost three).
The story of a mouse and whale who find solace in a most unlikely friendship is charming and very applicable to human relationships. I think this book can teach children that friendship can be found in a people who are not necessarily like ourselves...and that these friendships are often some of the most important and profound in our lives. Hopefully, children will take away from this book the message that not everyone is the same, and that so much can be valued and gained from finding friends in those who are different from all the rest.

About the Author

Mary Warner Marien is a professor in the Department of Fine Arts at Syracuse University New York where she teaches courses on photographic history as well as on art criticism and its history. In 2008 she won an Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writer award for her continuing work on the history and theory of documentary photography and is the author of 'Photography and its Critics' (Cambridge University Press, 1997) as well as numerous articles on the history of photography.

Pretty great textbook

This was required for a 400-level history of photography class. The pictures in it are gorgeous, and the history was pretty thorough in that it seemed to cover all the major photographers of a given era (then my professor would go into greater detail about them individually). This book covers a TON of photographers, eras, movements, and so on. It does get a little dry, but it's easy to read. It's a huge and heavy book, so try not to have to cart it around everywhere you go.

I felt like the content wasn't arranged very well. Sometimes they would include pieces of important info scattered. Like they would talk about Atget's history and other important stuff, then talks about other things only to write something important about him somewhere else. It's really hard to keep track of all main points of a certain subject. A lot of book turning and glossary hunting I would say

This was a class assigned text that I enjoyed alot, so much that Ill return to it to continue exploring the dense content and to reinforce what I have already learned. Middle-Grade Math Minutes

I use this book in my 7th grade classroom and it is wonderful. I use the minutes as daily warm ups for my students. In my opinion, this is a spiral review of all of the basic skills that they need. If I weren't using it in my classroom, I'd definately use it with my children to sharpen their basic skills. I can't say enough about this book.

Great summer practice

This math minute series is wonderful. My children have used this series for years now. It is great review of math concepts and both of my children enjoy doing their page a day. My eight year old simply likes to work the problems out and my twelve year old tries to race the clock. Much better than other worksheets. Highly recommend.

Middle-Grade Math Minutes: One Hundred Minutes to Better Basic Skills

A great way to start the day! This works awesome to have up on the overhead for the kids to complete as they come in the door in the morning. It also gives me ideas for lessons on skills that need more attention.
