FACTOR ANALYSIS
Factor analysis is used to uncover the latent structure (dimensions) of a set of variables. It reduces attribute space from a larger number of variables to a smaller number of factors and as such is a "non-dependent" procedure (that is, it does not assume a dependent variable is specified). Illustrated with numerous how-to figures, output tables, and examples for SPSS, SAS, and Stata.
New in the 2013 edition: 50% additional coverage; now covers categorical (nonlinear) categorical principal components analysis as well as principal components and principal factor analysis for continuous variables; thorough restructuring for better readability; new coverage for Stata as well as SPSS and SAS; coverage of factor loading plots; expanded discussion of rotation methods; hyperlinking of FAQs to key words in text; numerous other updates.

A disappointment
By Ian K.
I have been working on factor models for investment portfolios. I am always looking for references. The best reference I have found so far is Modeling Financial Time Series with S-Plus by Zivot and Wang, but this reference is getting a bit long in the tooth. For one thing, R has completely replaced S-Plus.
The start of Garson's Factor Analysis is well written and I purchased the book (or really, the technical version of a novella) on that basis. Unfortunately the book has a number of problems, at least for my purposes. Perhaps the strongest is that the book provides only a shallow coverage of factor analysis. After providing an overview of factor analysis, the book launches into how SPSS and SAS can be used for factor analysis. This discussion includes screen shots of the various dialogs. As an R user, this was not very useful.
A book that provided a deeper discussion of factor analysis would have been usable regardless of the statistical package that was being used. But this was not present here. I'm not looking for a book of proofs and lemmas, but this is a discussion of factor analysis largely (completely?) devoid of mathematics.
The book concentrates on the application of Principle Component Analysis (PCA) for factor models. But rather than describing how PCA can describe a model, it immediately launches into a discussion of how SPSS can be used.
Perhaps these books are the "missing manuals" for statistical analysis on SPSS. But for any one else these books are likely to be a disappointment. I am going to remove the book from the Kindle library since it is never going to be of any use to me.

Factor Analysis
By Jag
This book from the Blue book series is a very practical tool for the busy researcher needing to find quick and reliable answers. You have surely heard that tacit knowledge is not found in books, this is probably true but this book brings out exactly what is not covered in many mainstream stats books on EFA and CFA and what you would normally learn by having a close interaction with an experienced researcher. The FAQ section is a treasure of information you will not find easily!

Excellent

Simple, right to the point, enough details, good guide to actual analysis are some to the key features. Recommend to statistical and research colleagues.
