Absolutely essential

If your precalculus class is using David Cohen's "Precalculus, 7th Edition," and you're learning most of this stuff for the first time - or don't have mathematics embedded in your DNA - you're definitely going to want to have this "Student Solutions Manual." As someone who has a tough time with the way math is taught in most schools, I found the material in the textbook to be very confusing manner. I found it extremely helpful to be able to see the homework problems worked out. I learned just as much from the Solutions Manual as I did from the actual textbook. $40 to $70 seems like a lot to pay, but I think it was worth it.

Much Needed

A must-buy for the pre-calculus class I took. My particular professor was not a very highly rated instructor, he often wasted time during class by going off on tangents and telling various life stories. He also tended to teach one thing, while the homework was completely different.

One caveat; There a few (pretty rare) answers in this book that are NOT the correct answer to the problem.

its is an overjoy to own

Although I feel somewhat lazier with this solutions manual, I find it nice to have. It is easier to self teach when I miss a class because I can see step by step how to arrive at an answer. Obviously the answers in the manual are more detailed than the one in the back of the textbook.

Amazon prime got this to my doorstep very fast and I have zero complaints

beg to disagree

I really feel obliged to disagree with the panning review given above. I am a professional philosopher myself, and while I ultimately would reject natural law theory as a basis for ethics, for many of the problems with it which Lisska identifies and vainly struggles to overcome in his book, I was very impressed by the book itself. I think Lisska situates contemporary natural theory within the various debates over law and ethics over the last century, identifies the key "metaphysical" problem with the theory, namely, its reliance upon the concept of all humans sharing a common nature or essence, and puts forward a reasonable and hardly extravagent functional alternative to Aristotelian essences as a possible basis for furhter natural law theorizing.
No, I was not ulimtatley convinced by the book, but I was very impressed with its clarity and it sophistication. Unlike the other review, this is one of the few books on Aquinas which I would not part with. Someone with an interest in what makes Aquinas a perenially interesting philosopher should buy the other reviewer's copy--I already own one or I would!

He spends at least the better part of two chapters on it

I'm a legal scholar preparing to write a book on contract theory from a realist perspective, inspired by Gordley's work on the "philosophical origins of modern contract doctrine." I had not been able to find anything that introduced in a sophisticated way the metaethics of Aquinas and Aristotle on natural law. I finally found this book, exactly what I was looking for. Lisska is almost too careful and it makes the book somewhat plodding, but he makes up for it with the clarity of his style. I hardly know what to say to the critic below who claims Lisska simply falls prey to the naturalistic fallacy. He spends at least the better part of two chapters on it. I wished he had spent less time on it and more time on Kripke and Nelson and their respective metaphysics. I'm giving this book 5 stars instead of 4 because it is the only book I could find on its essential (a little pun there) topic after much searching.

Unacceptable on Every Level

The first, fifty-five pages are given over to ubiquitous promises the author intends to make good in the last two-hundred-and-fifty pages, and doesn't. These promises allude to precursors of natural law in its many variegated forms, some of which are not really "natural law" principles at all. Most of the discussion is about how some contemporary Thomists and neo-Thomists have approached the issue, but the reader cannot follow the subtle nuances of this discussion without knowing the meaning of natural law at the outset. The exposition of a reconsidered natural law follows this meandering, often uninteresting, introduction. In another confusion, the author discusses the impact of Moore's naturalistic fallacy on natural law before he describes what Aquinas' "natural law" is. So, over a hundred pages are heuristically inverted, leaving the reader to ponder future promises and anticipate an argument before he knows even the meanings of the terms of the argument drawn. If I did not already possess knowledge of Aquinas' natural law theory, these pages would have been meaningless; as it is, I found the points they may have been trying to make arcane, discursive, and near solipsistic.
Lisska insists upon ten fundamental principles necessary to serve the function of adopting Aquinas' natural law theory. Four of these principles require we accept "essences," a medieval concept wholly foreign in modern philosophy. A fifth principle requires "truth" as a correspondence theory between mind and things (see, Searle, "Construction of Social Reality" for why this is no longer so). The other principles insist that (6) metaphysics of morals is possible, (7) that reason takes precedence over the affective will, &c. In other words, one has to adopt the medieval, which is to say the Aristotlean, metaphysical schema in order for a "modern reconstruction" of Aquinas' natural law to succeed. Lisska writes, "In Aquinas's ontology, the dispositional paradigm holds only for temporal essences" (87), and again, "Divine commands must be in accord with the rational demands of the eternal law" (ibid), but it is precisely those very preconditions that makes Aquinas' natural law inimical to contemporary philosophy in the first place. I don't "see" what Lisska means by an "analytical reconstruction." His writing is the most circumlocutious writing on Thomistic natural law as one can find; it would be better to assimilate it from the source: "Summa Theologica," I-II, q. 90-97, esp. q. 94.
Finally, by page 107, we attain Lisska's definition of the natural law: "Because the end itself determines the well-functioning of the human person. The disposition has, as a part of its very nature, a tendency towards a specific end. This end, when realized, contributes to the well-being of the individual. This is the crux of natural law theory. Nature has `determined', as it were, the ends which lead to the well-being of the individuals of the natural kind." From this nexus, the rest is downhill, as Lisska then evaluates how different scholastic and neo-scholastic philosophers of this past century have adapted this explication into their working-definitions. It's a tremendous bore, not at all enlightening, and of relative useless speculation on its applicability today. If it weren't for Robert George's excellent work in the field, I would have tossed natural law theory out the window. The book is that bad.
I routinely buy from Oxford University Press based on their unparalleled quality of authors and editors. How this travesty passed its high editorial standards is deeply puzzling. I have highlighted only some of my disappointments with this book, but overall it is one of the worst books I've read in the field of theology, philosophy, or anthropology. My copy is for sale.

Poorly written summarization of the standard

This published-on-demand (and probably self-published) book would probably not have been published by reputable publishing house, given the poor editing, syntax, and lack of substance. The book is essentially a poor summary of the readily available and free standards documents. Rather than export some packet captures to text the author chose to take a screen shot at a medium resolution and embed the graphic into the text. Likewise for many tables, which appear to be screen shots of Open Office or MS Excel spreadsheets. Perhaps the most egregious of the illustrations are what are clearly uncredited (and blatantly illegal) snippets from the copyrighted IETF documents.

Having said all that, I'm willing to give the author a couple of stars because if you want to read a poorly edited summary of the standards documents, this is your only option at this point.

It may have been me, but I was expecting more than from this book. I thought it would be a good reference and insight into SDN, but it's not.

The introductory material is very limited, the book goes into many pages of OpenFlow protocol operation and fields. So it is a great book for OpenFlow 1.0 reference, however it not a good introductory book.

Excellent guide to the R language

There are hundreds of R books, but this is the best one to address the core problem of learning to *program* in R. As reviewer Jason notes, R is used by several audiences with varying needs, but anyone who uses R for long must come to terms with learning to program it. This is the book for that.

What Matloff does is to lay out the essentials of the R language (or S, if you prefer) in depth but in a readable fashion, with well-chosen examples that reinforce learning about the language itself (as opposed to focusing on statistics or data analysis).

I'm a long-time (12 years) R user, which is my platform for analytics every day, and I have programmed in a variety of languages from C to Perl. I have long missed the fact that there is nothing for R comparable to Kernighan & Ritchie ("K&R", The C Programming Language) or similar programming classics; finally there is. Matloff is not quite as beautiful and elegant as K&R (and to be fair, is not in their position as the language creator) but this book has similar goals and comes reasonably close.

I think there are two primary audiences for this book: those who are learning R from a computer science or programming background; and statisticians and others who use the programming language and want a thorough exposition. In my case, for instance, despite having written perhaps 100k lines of R code over the years, there remained areas where I was uneasy (e.g., exactly how do lists relate to data frames). Matloff sets it all straight, in friendly, readable fashion. Even in rudimentary chapters, I learned shortcuts and miscellaneous functions that are quite useful. The examples throughout are more "CS-like" than statistical, which is highly advantageous for this topic.

In addition to the tutorial content, it is well-suited as a quick reference. It doesn't aim to be comprehensive from a function point of view (which is almost impossible, and what R Help is for), but it is comprehensive from a programming conceptual point of view.

In short, if you program R, and unless you're a member of R-Core, then I believe you'll enjoy this, will learn something, and will refer back to it repeatedly.

Valuable addition to R bookshelf

Jason's juxtaposition of "data analysts" and "serious R programmers" strikes me as a little unfair, but I see what he means. Consider yourself a "serious R programmer" (SRP), and buy this book, if you are interested in the following aspects of R:

Variable scope - Chapter 7
User-defined classes - Ch 9
Debugging - Ch 13
Profiling and performance (mostly, vectorization) - Ch 14
Interfacing with C/C++ and Python - Ch 15
Parallel computation ("pure R" approach using "snow" package, and C++-aided approach using "OpenMP" library) - Ch 16

I have not seen the material of Chapters 15-16 in any other R reference; the other topics have shown up elsewhere - in "R in Nutshell", for example - but get more attention here. The chapters would have been much shorter if written in a "Nutshell" style; however, I do not automatically consider a verbose, user-friendly writing style a negative.

The early chapters introduce R in a way similar to other books - except for (a) eschewing discussion of the language's statistical repertoire, which makes sense given "programming" focus, and (b) showing a greater interest in the "matrix" class - and although they do it quite nicely (this said, let me ask the author to reconsider his "extended examples"), I would not recommend "Art of R Programming" to non-SRPs, and point them to Robert Kabacoff's "R in Action" or (the E-Z version) Paul Teetor's "R Cookbook" instead.

Overall, while the book did not quite click for me - I am a "data analyst" and at present do not have much "need for speed" (cf. C/C++); on the other hand, I would like a firmer grasp on R's OOP, but here, "Art of R Programming" only whets one's appetite - I cannot deny its quality and unique value for budding SRPs. If there was any wavering between four and five stars on my part, the appreciation of how pretty and inexpensive the book is tipped the scales.

A Programmers Introduction to R

The uniformly good reviews for "The Art Of R Programming" led me to read it, and I'm glad I did. I've used R casually for years as a sort of "secret weapon" to quickly analyze a few millions data points, graph it, and draw useful conclusions, all before some one could load the data into a SQL database. I've long believed that R is a clean, well designed language for data analysis that was missing a good introductory text for programmers. R's type system, lexical structure, run time mechanics, and functional nature make it one of the best designed languages around, but this also seems to be one of the best kept secrets in the software community. Until I read "The Art of R Programming" I'd never come across material on R that introduced R as a programming language. Most of what I saw presented it as a statistical toolbox that you could, almost accidentally, program.

However, be warned that the book is not rigorous, either as an introduction or a reference. It is concise, easy to read, and much is driven by case studies to show you how to do things. But it often left me uneasy as a software engineer. For example, it states that R uses "lazy evaluation" when a more accurate statement would be that it is simply evaluates function arguments lazily. The description of the run time object environment is clunky: evaluation contexts, closures, and recursion are treated separately. It does not entirely explain how symbol look up works for functions (you won't learn why "sum
