Divided into 14 chapters and an epilogue, the sentences are shorter and chapters are condensed from the original but the rich details and suspense are ever present. Lacking are a bibliography and a notes section. Excellent black-and-white illustrations complement the text. Devoted to the South, John Wilkes Booth had planned to kidnap Lincoln and hold him hostage, but when that plan did not materialize, he hatched his assassination plot. Co-conspirators in Washington, Maryland, and Virginia helped him escape and evade capture for 12 days before being surrounded in a barn and killed. Readers will be engrossed by the almost hour-by-hour search and by the many people who encountered the killer as he tried to escape. It is a tale of intrigue and an engrossing mystery. This device succeeds in building suspense but sometimes proves awkward and confusing, especially where chronology is concerned. Worse, there is no appended matter—no index, no notes on sources, no bibliography, no time line. As a result, statements like “It was the most beautiful night in the history of the capital,” or “Jones’ eyes lit up,” or “It was one of the happiest days of his life” are unsourced. The subject matter remains intrinsically fascinating, however, and Swanson’s colorful account will hold readers’ interest throughout. The intensity of the book was something I enjoyed. The book took us through the story of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination and the capture of John Booth. From the shot to the capture, this book was so precise on the facts of the event. For example, on the same night of Lincoln’s assassination, Booth’s accomplices had plans to attack other state officials.
There are a few things I did not enjoy about this book. It was a little slow in the middle as Booth and his accomplice were siting in the woods. The story jumped around a little while they were transitioning characters, which could get a little confusing. Otherwise, it was a very enjoyable book.
If you like history, you would love this book. I am not big on history, but it kept me interested with all the action. Someone who enjoys thrillers or suspense, would also think it is great. People from 10 to 80 could find something interesting in the pages. I recommend it.

"Chasing Lincoln's Killer" was definitely a good book to read. Although there was a lot of people and it was confusing at first, I started to understand the the connection between them as the story moved on. This book gave me a lot of information on the assassination of President Lincoln and the manhunt of John Wilkes Booth and David Herold. I never knew that there was such a complex plan for it, and that other politicians were also attacked. I would recommend this book to those who are interested in this topic because it gives you so much information on it.

Perfect for home producers

While Robert Runstein's "Modern Recording Techniques" continues to serve as the recording studio "bible" (as it has been through it's many iterations over the last 40 or so years), The Studio SOS Book by the editors of Sound On Sound magazine is perfectly presented for its target audience of "bedroom producers". It contains inexpensive, down-to-earth fundamentals for getting the most out of what they refer to as a "project studio", whether that be a custom-built room, a converted garage space, or merely a corner of an apartment bedroom.

They've applied their experiences of over a decade of monthly project-studio overhauls to provide a wealth of no-nonsense tips, suggestions, and techniques that work. Written in a casual yet erudite style, topics include: choosing and setting up monitor speakers (Including extremely useful info about room placement and basic acoustic treatment), soundproofing, cabling & connections, vocal recording, instrumental recording, mixing, and mastering. The book is loaded with goodies, and should be part of every "project studio's" library.

The studio SOS book is by far the most in depth for basic home recording.

I own countless books on the art of recording, but like so may of them, they go way deeper in level of recoding & mixing that I feel only pertains to big budget & production studios. For example, recording drums. So many books give instructions & advise on the assumption that they are in a huge perfect room, played on a kit costing a few thousand dollars, and recording a drummer on the same level as, let's say, Chad Smith from TRHCP...
The studio SOS book makes no assumptions at all. In fact, the book gives the best advise if someone is recording drums in the worst room, on the worst kit, and a mediocre drummer behind the kit! And my experience (as I'm sure a lot would agree) are the typical environments a lot of people if not most are stuck having to record in. If this is describing you and your environment, .... Also, Subscribe to their Magazine! Give them support!! I don't know what I would do if they ever went under.....

About the Author
As a professor, Diane E. Papalia has taught thousands of undergraduates at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She received her bachelor’s degree, majoring in psychology, from Vassar College and both her master’s degree in child development and family relations and her Ph.D. in life-span developmental psychology from West Virginia University. She has published numerous articles in such professional journals as Human Development, International Journal of Aging and Human Development, Sex Roles, Journal of Experimental Child Psychology and Journal of Gerontology. Most of these papers have dealt with her major research focus, cognitive development from childhood through old age.

Dr. Sterns received his Ph.D. in Life-Span Developmental Psychology from West Virginia University in 1971. His major areas of interest include industrial gerontology, life-span development, training and career development. He is Director of the Institute for Life- Span Development and Gerontology. Courses typically taught include psychology of adulthood and aging, industrial/gerontological psychology, and undergraduate psychology courses. His publications have appeared in many gerontology journals including Experimental Aging Research, The Counseling Psychologist, Journal of Gerontology, Generations, Journal of Applied Gerontology. He has served on the editorial board of Psychology and Aging, The Gerontologist, and Journal of Women and Aging and serves on the editorial boards of Experimental Aging Research and Research on Aging. He is a Fellow of the American Psychology Association, Gerontological Society of America and the American Psychological Society. Current research includes training of adult and older adult workers, personality factors, and retirement adjustment and satisfaction, as well as personality factors in housing choices in retirement. Other research includes alcohol treatment and aging, and life planning issues for older adults with mental retardation.

Ruth Duskin Feldman is an award-winning writer and educator. With Diane E. Papalia and Sally Wendkos Olds, she coauthored the fourth and seventh editions of Human Development and the eighth edition of A Child's World. She also is coauthor, with Dr. Papalia and Cameron J. Camp, of Adult Development and Aging. A former teacher, she has developed educational materials for all levels from elementary school through college and has prepared ancillaries to accompany the Papalia-Olds books. She is author or coauthor of four books addressed to general readers, including Whatever Happened to the Quiz Kids? Perils and Profits of Growing Up Gifted. She has written for numerous newspapers and magazines and has lectured extensively and made national and local media appearances throughout the United States on education and gifted children. She received her bachelor's degree from Northwestern University, where she was graduated with highest distinction and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

Required book for college class.

Basic information, nothing special. It fit the purpose of the class I was taking. I would say this is a great book for someone who is just beginning to learn about adult development and aging. However, if you already know the basics, this is more of a review than a fresh new table of stats.

great review

This was a great review for histo. The text is easy to understand and the questions after each section, as well in the back of the book, are very helpful. I got through it in one and a half days and felt like I had a good grasp on its content. The only problem was that the standardized microbiology/histo test we took contained much information not found in this book.

Got a NEW looking book. It's a 9/10 on newness which is good enough for me. The cover is a bit bent but the inside is not highlighted or written in or anything like that. I'm happy with it. Great book. Teaches you what you need to know for a good prep into Path.

Good for a quick review of histo

Nice for a quick and dirty review. The Gartner and Hiatt text is a very exhaustive reference, but this BRS text is a very light and easy read. Important structures and terms are bolded. Questions at the ends of each chapter are simple, but cover the topic well. Do not use this as a resource for practicing boards questions, but rather to review the material and as a quick reference guide.

Roberts Breaks New Ground

I am a big fan of Nora Roberts. I love the ones that she writes with a touch of magick in them, and this time she delivers in a big way -- witches, vampires, shift-shaper, time travelers, and of course, romance.

This is the first of a triology centering around Hoyt, a wizard, and his vampire brother Cian. They are brought together by Morrigan, the pagan goddess of war. She gives them a mission -- save the world from Lilith, a 2,000 year old vampire who just happens to be Cian's sire. She tells Hoyt that he must gather four more to complete the circle of heroes who will travel to Geall, another world where they will do battle with Lilith and her army of vampires. They have a very short time to train and prepare for this war which will take place on Samhain, the pagan name for the present day Halloween.

Hoyt meets his true love, Glenna, in modern day New York City. She is a witch with tremendous power. Together they prove to be an indomitable foe of the vamps.

Usually Roberts centers her stories around the romance, but this time, it is more about the situation that they are in. The first book is mostly about how the group comes together and how they prepare for the mission given them. I grew a little bored when they were training and such, and that is the only reason I gave this book a four instead of five stars. I would have liked a little more character development for each of them. I didn't seem to connect with Hoyt as much as I usually do with the heroes of a Roberts book.

I really liked the description of Glenna's spells, and her belief system. She prefers the safety of a circle when casting her spells, and Roberts does a good job of describing her magick and the dangers of mis-using your powers. Being Wiccan and a practicing witch, I am appreciative of how Roberts is careful of how she presents the craft and the old religion.

My daughter is reading the second one, and tells me that it is really good, too. Hey, how can you go wrong with a book by Nora Roberts?

Not her best, but good

First book in Roberts' new Circle Trilogy, we enter the world of ancient Celtic magic and vampires. When his twin brother is made into a vampire, powerful sorcerer Hoyt Mac Cionaoith is sent on a quest by the goddess Morrigan, to save the world from vampires - but not in his own time. He is to find Cian, his brother, and form a band of 6 warriors to start the war against Lilith, the vampire who turned Cian. Glenna is the witch in the group, and they are then joined by two cousins from Gael who were victims of vampires in their own world. They travel back to Ireland, present day, to prepare for the coming battle, in the Mac Cionaoith ancestral home which Cian has bought and maintained. The circle of six is completed there, and the magic between Hoyt and Glenna is more than just out of this world. I kind of had a hard time with Roberts' writing this type of magic - I am more accustomed to her other type of paranormal abilities, and vampires didn't quite sit with me. Other than that it is a genuinely interesting story with a lot of humor and action.

A bleed out....

As a Nora Roberts fan, I of course look forward to new books by her. However, this one totally missed in terms of a worthwhile read. That said, I would personally have preferred that she had made Angels Falls a paperback and taken this trilogy and put more effort into it and made it a hardcover. Books one and two of the trilogy were rather boring in my humble opinion. You could see a relationship building between the tortured Cian and the future queen Moira--the development made the third book satisfying, but one and two were not. The pairings (Hoyt/Glenna, Larkin/Blair) seemed forced and there wasn't enough foundation to want to see these folks succeed as couples. The teasers were there to make the pairings powerful, but the reality was that the books were too short, too much of a fluff adventure to allow it to happen.

I also would have liked to have seen more information about vampires--historical and "factual" (whatever that means). It seemed like Ms. Roberts was trying to combine the vampire, time travel, romance and general fiction genres all in this trilogy.

If you gave up the series at this book, my advice would be to read all three with your focus on Cian and Moira. Both characters develop well in the trilogy. The other two pairings do not. You can see glimpses of development, but suddenly Hoyt and Glenna are a pair and you think "Did I miss something here?" How and why did they suddenly with weeks fall madly in love in the "I can't live without you as you complete me" framework. Just wasn't enough information in the book.

Again, I think this would have made a far better hardcover with some additional writing and depth in it and a focus on Cian and Moira who to me are the most interesting of the six major characters.
