About the Author
Larry Jeffus is a welder with over 55 years of welding experience, and he has his own well-equipped welding shop. In his welding career he has passed many welding certification tests in a wide variety of processes, positions, and on many different material types and thicknesses. Larry has provided welding and professional consulting services locally, nationally, and internationally to major corporations, small businesses, government agencies, schools, colleges, and individuals. He is a Life Member of the American Welding Society. Larry Jeffus has over forty years experience as a dedicated classroom teacher and is the author of several Delmar Cengage Learning welding publications. Prior to retiring from teaching, Professor Jeffus taught at Eastfield College, part of the Dallas County Community College District. Since retiring from full-time teaching, he remains very active in the welding community, especially in the field of education. He serves on several welding program technical advisory committees and has visited high school, college, and technical campuses in more than forty states and four foreign countries. Professor Jeffus was selected as Outstanding Post-Secondary Technical Educator in the State of Texas by the Texas Technical Society. Professor Jeffus has served for 12 years as a board member on the Texas Workforce Investment Council in the Texas Governor's office where he works to develop a skilled workforce and bring economic development to the state. He served as a member of the Apprenticeship Project Leadership Team where he helped establish apprenticeship training programs for Texas, and he has made numerous trips to Washington lobbying for vocational and technical education. Larry Jeffus holds a Bachelor of Science Degree and has completed post graduate studies.

Serious about welding?

If you are serious about learning how to weld and wish to do it well, then this workbook is necessary. Completing the workbook commits the knowledge in the book to memory. My instructor requires some exercises to be turned in, so buying a used workbook or planning on re-selling this is not practical.

Easy, quick read. Useful ideas that apply to anyone in almost any situation. Recommend!

Two Awesome Hours is pretty much everything you want in a book about productivity. First, it doesn't try to "squeeze blood from a stone". That is to say, it assumes that the reader is a busy person who has probably tried other ways to squeeze more out of their day, so it stays away from "finding more time" and focuses on what to do with the time you already have. Second, it offers strategies that are new and fresh--those ideas that make you say "Yes! I wish I'd thought of that." Particularly helpful are his suggestions on how to deal with distractions and how to handle those points in the day when you get to choose what to do next. Third, the writing is clear, concise (it's a very fast read), and friendly. Davis backs up his ideas with research and facts but doesn't get bogged down in the science. Easy, useful read. Highly recommend!

A brilliant first book. This accessible read synergizes common-sense advice with the latest research to help any knowledge worker leverage their daily decision points and mental energy to create the perfect environment for two awesome hours of productivity. I've already implemented Dr. Davises suggestions on how to stop fighting distractions, leverage my mind-body connection, and make my workspace work for me. Stop trying to work like a tireless computer and stop berating yourself for not being able to focus non-stop on that proposal for 8 hours. Instead, understand how your mind and body works, and make that work to your advantage. Dr. Davis makes his concepts accessible through clear writing that never condescends, using believable anecdotes that all of us knowledge workers will ruefully recognize. I read this book every day on the train to work, and was able to easily apply its suggestions that day. Highly recommended.

Full disclosure Josh was my tutor on my neuroscience of leadership masters but if anything that meant i approached this book with even higher expectations than if it was just another book taking our understanding of neuroscience and applying it to work. What i love about the book is the crisply written science evidence and practical advise which is easy to apply. I have been experimenting with the ideas Josh presents, especially on decision points and energy and they really work.The other thing i love is the style of writing. It feels like Josh is talking to you right out of the page.

We recently ran a webinar on how work habits hinder the brain and most of our our participants said they have no more hours available to work they must find new ways to be effective and productive. This book gives them the means to do that.

Easy to read and follow well organized plan for a lifetime of healthy eating for you and your children.

I wanted to review Extra Lean Family because being Mexican Mario has many issues I have when it comes to family tradition and eating. I myself am Hispanic and was born in Puerto Rico although my ancestors came from Spain. I have found this book to work for my family and me when it comes to nutrition, meals and our total health. In the introduction Mario points out how he struggled with eating right as a young adolescent and into his teens. He points out the main goal of his books are is to help others find the right balance when it comes to nutrition. Now that he is married and has a family of his own he has decided to extend that information with this Extra Lean Family book. Chapter 1 of the book is quick and focused on the metabolism, calories, servings good and bad fats and other information, including child size portions. Just a refresher if you already know some things and great insight for others who do not, especially when it comes to child portions. The second chapter moves on to what kinds of foods you should and should not have in the house, shopping for the right foods and food labels. Chapter 3 helps you maintain the Extra Lean habits. While chapter 4 is "the five week meal plan." which includes a grocery list for each week, simple family recipes and nutrition information. In chapter 5 the focus goes to the nutrition of the child, including healthy snacks, options for the picky eater and really good points on how to help your child eat better without being overbearing. Even if we can't get our kids to eat right we can at least show them how to by example, which later can be a great benefit once they get older and realise the importance of it, a great point in the book. Chapter 6 leads into other helpful tips like how to fool your appetite, fast food rules and some pointers on physical fitness.

Overall what I liked most about this book is that it is a condensed 250 pages with tons of great information. So it is not over whelming parents to read and begin to use this nutrition plan, a plan that regular hard working people can implement into their lives. It can be so hard for parents to stick to a family meal plan when they spend all day at work and come home to parenting. Extra Lean Family is not a book for those who are looking to have their fa, in our fast paced society. This book is not a weight loss book for a family to lose weight on a special diet. It is not a get thin quick scheme and yes some of these concepts in the book you probably have already even heard of or read before. However it is a well organized book, a book on how to lead a happy healthy lifestyle with food, to help us parents implement daily healthy habits into our lives and the lives of our children, so they can continue to eat healthy into their adulthood and later pass it on to their own children someday.

Excellent daily meal planner

I tried Extra Lean Family Meals from my local library and have really enjoyed the meals. Next week I have to return the book so I'm ordering it today from Amazon. I did the same with Mario's first diet book and still use it today (it has it's pages torn, food stains and the binding is coming off due to using it so much). I will probably end up ordering his first book again as soon as the old one becomes unusable. Would highly recommend both books. Liked the way he's incorporated a grocery list into his second book as it really helps. Thanks Mario!

Great book. As informative as it is entertaining.

I love this book. Despite the 1000+ pages, I have read it twice, and will probably read it again. Kenneth Roberts is such a fabulous historian, and what he did with this book is truly remarkable. As a history major I can honestly say that until I read this book I do not believe I had even begun to glimpse what really happened during the American Revolution. By telling his story through the eyes of a few staunch royalists, he somehow manages to show the less heroic (but realistic) side of the revolution, while highlighting the series of amazingly illogical events that led to England's loss of this country.

Unlike another reader, I do not think it is necessary to read all four of Roberts books in order to fully appreciate this one. The other books are also great reads, but the themes and perspectives of them deal with more well-known aspects of the Revolution, while this book introduces facts and ideas that most Americans have never been introduced to.

The characters are wonderful (Thomas Buel is probably one of the best characters I have ever read in any book) and the story is incredibly entertaining for such a long and detailed historical novel. Great book, I highly recommend it - especially if you think you know all there is to know about the American Revolution.

So That's How It Really Was might be a sub-title for this historical novel. You have read the viewpoints reported of Sam Adams and the Patriots, now read and better understand the views of the British. When Howe and Clinton were sent to America to seek a peace with the rebellious New England colonists, they had no idea of the intensity as well as the power unleashed in the hands of the "rabble" known as patriots. You must read this account so you will have a better appreciation of the Tories' viewpoint and their initial willingness to settle peacefully as long as the colonies would remain within the control of England and rule of law. But much as we experience today, when the poor and frustrated lower class have had enough of economic injustice, they will rebel and strike out at the men of power and wealth. And in this case, they found another nation, France rebelling for similar reasons that Americans had endorsed. And the outcome is history for us all to read and learn from. This is a fine work told in the format of a riveting novel supported by well documented facts. Read and enjoy. Best wishes and good reading. REW

"Oliver Wiswell" by Kenneth Roberts

I ordered a used, in good condition, hardcover edition of the book for my son in Arizona, and it came through in good condition, he said. I had just read the book myself before, one of the few Kenneth Roberts' books I had not read. I think it was one of his best. It was an eye-opener to me on the Revolutionary War times, from start to finish, from the point of view of the Loyalists. I lived in the Boston area much of my life. What Roberts had to say about places in New England where I had been (like the Blue Hills and Milton and Boston itself) was fascinating. But then it was equally fascinating to learn about the peoples of that time in the other colonies. In one part of the book, Roberts distinguishes between the rebels who, from the Loyalist point of view, were rabble rousers (Samuel Adams and John Hancock, for example) and those who were nobler (George Washington and John Adams, for example). I had had no idea the extent to which the British squandered away their chances of winning the war outright, including on the part of my namesake (and forbear) General William Howe. A man named Buell (probably fictitious), whose life Wiswell saves, is like a brother to him throughout the book. Buell is a master of ingenuity and full of great humor. There is also a beautiful love story woven throughout. Oliver Wiswell is a wonderful, informative, exciting, serious, humorous, and poignant read.

About the Author

David K. Hayes, Ph.D. has over 35 years of experience in the field of hospitality management and education. Dr. Hayes initiated the hospitality management program at Texas Tech University. He has held faculty positions at Purdue University and the University of Houston’s Conrad Hilton College of Hotel Administration; as well as the position of Vice President of the Educational Institute of the American Hotel and Lodging Association (AH&LA). In 2005, Dr. Hayes formed Panda Professionals Hospitality Management and Training, (www.pandapros.com); a training resources company that develops customized hospitality education-related computer simulations, print publications, and seminars. Dr. Hayes is a prolific author, having published over a dozen textbooks, including versions translated into Chinese, Portuguese, Croatian and Spanish. In addition to his Ph.D., Dr. Hayes earned the hospitality industry certification of Food Management Professional (FMP) from the National Restaurant Association (NRA) where he has served as a consultant on the ManageFirst program. He also has earned the Certified Food and Beverage Executive (CFBE) and Certified Hospitality Administrator (CHA) designations from the American Hotel and Lodging Association. Dr. Hayes received his Bachelor of Science (BS), and Masters of Science (MS), degrees in Hospitality Management and his Ph.D. degree in Educational Administration from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana.

Dr. Jack Ninemeier is a professor emeritus in TheSchool of Hospitality Business at Michigan State University.� His Ph.D. is from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.� He holds Master of Science and undergraduate degrees from, respectively, Iowa State University and Southern Illinois University.� His experience includes more than thirty years of university teaching at Michigan State University and the University of New Orleans, seven years of service as a state-level administrator of a feeding program serving in excess of 350,000 meals daily, and four years of experience in various positions in commercial foodservice operations.� Additionally, he was a Research Consultant for the Educational Institute of the American Hotel & Lodging Association for twelve years.� Dr. Ninemeier is the author, co-author, editor, or co-editor of seventy-three books relating to various aspects of foodservice and healthcare management, and he has written numerous articles involving these and related areas.

Allisha A. Miller is a hospitality industry professional specializing in the development of educational and training materials targeting today’s technology savvy student. Superb architecture in miniature

Catalog read at the Members Lounge at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

This beautiful small exhibit is a perfect example of what treasures the Met can bring to its visitors. The indigenous Andean and Mesoamerican peoples of Latin America represented buildings in small clay and stone models of houses and temples apparently for funerary and burial rites, and to honor important people at shrines.

The exhibit is enclosed in its own smallish shrine and comprises artifacts from cultures of the Mayas, Aztecs, Recuay, and Nayarit, with objects dating back to the first millennium B.C. There is a five inch high -inch-tall stone Mezcalan temple for example, without great detail but nonetheless quite powerful.

A 12 inch high Nayarit house model depicts a feast scene on the upper level, while the family’s dead, who would have been traditionally buried under the building, are below. The piece is one of the most complex architectural models to originate from the ancient Americas, according to the exhibit catalog; it is so detailed that the Met furnished visitors with small flashlights to examine the interior.

A similar sized Nayarit a ball-court game diorama in clay depicts a game that occurred between 200 B.C. and 500 A.D. At the top is a row of onlookers watching players at the base. One player is hitting the ball with the side of his leg.

There are a number of smaller objects, and all of the pieces in the exhibit are described with some analysis of their functions and with excellent photographs in this excellent guide to the exhibit.

Try to see the exhibit before it leaves in September; this catalog is an excellent memory device and will also give you very good impression of the treasures themselves if you can't see them in person.
