About the Author
The life and teachings of Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen anticipated and embodied the spirit of both the Second Vatican Council and the New Evangelization. A gifted orator and writer, he was a pioneer in the use of media for evangelization: His radio and television broadcasts reached an estimated 30 million weekly viewers. He also wrote more than 60 works on Christian living and theology, many of which are still in print. Born in 1895, Sheen grew up in Peoria, Illinois, and was ordained a priest for the diocese in 1919. He was ordained an auxiliary bishop in New York City in 1951. As the head of his mission agency, the Society for the Propagation of the Faith (1950 1966), and as Bishop of Rochester (1966-1969), Sheen helped create 9,000 clinics, 10,000 orphanages, and 1,200 schools; and his contributions educated 80,000 seminarians and 9,000 religious. Upon his death in 1979, Sheen was buried at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York. His cause for canonization was returned to his home diocese of Peoria in January 2011, and Sheen was proclaimed "Venerable" by Pope Benedict XVI on June 28, 2012. The first miracle attributed to his intercession was approved in March 2014, paving the way for his beatification.

Best Book EVER

Absolutely love this book. Bought it for Lenten reading and it really had a profound effect on my "journey". Bishop Sheen has a way with words that make the most difficult concept so easy to grasp. This is a book that I will read often; the lessons are timeless and not just for Lent. I'm planning to buy additional copies to give to others. Really, really good book, and the best I've found on the capital sins.

Magnificent Essays: Thoughtful and meaningful

I've just read the first chapter, on the capital sin of anger. Sheen's essay is just like one exploding firework after another. His point is, that people who get angry at others need to learn how to forgive -- they'd better, for the sake of their eternal destiny. And, he explains this which such artful and poetic language. His words are beautiful.

Mari Grinde Arntzen is a journalist who writes for Aftenposten and Dagens N�ringsliv and teaches at the School of Fashion Industry in Oslo, Norway. Kerri Pierce is a translator specializing in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, and German. Her translations include Mela Hartwig’s Am I a Redundant Human Being?; Kjersti Skomsvold’s The Faster I Walk, The Smaller I Am; and Lars Svendsen’s A Philosophy of Freedom, the last also published by Reaktion Books. May interest fashionistas, but it's a dense personal essay on fashion that seems to go in circles.

This is a very difficult little book to characterize. It's essentially a personal, meditative essay on fashion. It's not impenetrable, but after reading it, I am not sure if Pierce is apologizing for fashion, saying conspicuous consumption is unsustainable, or that fashion is natural and useful.

Pierce does have some good lines. Here's one: "Kate Middleton dressed like a princess; therefore no one doubted that she could perform the job of one." That suggests that people do read a book by its cover, or perhaps that a savvy person can lever herself into a position where fate is likely to strike for the positive.

Skim a section or two of the book before you buy it. It may appeal to readers interested in fashion. Note that, unlike most other books by this publisher, it has no illustrations. It's a barebones essay.

El rat race se ha intensificado a cifras r�cord: Aunque tenemos m�s herramientas para vivir, tambi�n tenemos mucho m�s competencia para sobrevivir y contamos con menos tiempo para nosotros mismos y para compartir con nuestros seres queridos. Ya es dif�cil platicar con calma con el vecino de casa--o hasta el de la banca del parque.

En �ste mundo donde la tecnolog�a, la facilidad y rapidez de las comunicaciones han impactado la manera y velocidad del ritmo de vida y de trabajo y nos han llevado a ser part�cipes de nuevos est�ndares de trabajo. Todo el d�a estamos localizables por tel�fono o correo electr�nico. Cada vez existe menos tolerancia a la lentitud o falta en capacidad de respuesta: As� lo demandamos. As� otros nos lo demandar�n.

Ya no hay que esperar a que nos llegue la oportunidad deseada: hay que salir al mercado con planeaci�n, diferenciaci�n y un toque de creatividad que nos permita entrar con contundencia aprovechando las oportunidades que se nos presenten.

De ah� deberemos desarrollar tambi�n nuestras habilidades para aprovechar esos momentos clave de la vida que en mercadotecnia llamamos momentos de la verdad; aquellos que s�lo se presentan en muy pocas ocasiones y que cuando as� suceda sepamos como dialogar, hacer presentaciones efectivas, vender nuestros servicios, atributos y habilidades para finalmente lograr una negociaci�n o precio de venta. Todo a la vez, llegando preparados y evitando desaprovechar esas oportunidades de oro.
Finalmente, nuestra propuesta es que: prepar�ndose bien en las �reas m�s sensibles del Marketing, entendiendo bien los mercados en los cuales deseamos participar, aprendiendo los principios b�sicos de ventas del desarrollo de marcas (qu� mejor que la nuestra), aprendiendo a crear una buena imagen y comunicarla adecuadamente a la sociedad para lograr sobresalir y finalmente saber negociar estrat�gicamente cuidando nuestros intereses y balanceando nuestras actividades personales y profesionales, muy posiblemente consigamos lo que nos proponemos obteniendo m�s control sobre nuestra vida y nuestras actividades. Con esto creamos mayor demanda por lo que hacemos o al menos aumentamos significativamente las posibilidades de competir m�s eficazmente para lograr nuestros objetivos, ya sea dentro del mundo corporativo o trabajando para ti mismo con las ventajas y limitantes que cada uno de ellos conlleva.

Hace poco volv� a Central Park. Un trompetista hac�a su lucha entreteniendo a los transe�ntes. Se ve�a muy feliz, haciendo lo que realmente disfrutaba. Un grupo grande de adolescentes intercambiaba bromas en un ambiente de gran camarader�a y relajamiento. �Qu� nos cuesta conservar esto? Espero que ya que se integren al mundo tengan la visi�n y capacidad de hacer del rat race una pesadilla de las generaciones pasadas.
